Nursery at St Mary's Wavendon CofE Primary

At a Glance

Play stretches beyond the nursery room here: children have access to a forest school learning area, an enclosed outdoor space and the MUGA (Multi Use Games Area). St Mary's Wavendon takes children aged 3 and 4 into a purpose-built nursery within the primary school at Eagle Farm. That gives their early learning a school setting, with halls available alongside the nursery's own environment.

Christian values shape the nursery's stated ethos. Its approach centres on children's interests and experiences, with adults adapting learning to individual needs. The practical choice is between morning, afternoon and full-day patterns, so families can choose a shorter session or a day spanning both sessions.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework. In parent terms, learning brings together communication, movement and relationships with early literacy, maths, creative expression and discovering how the world works. Play is the main vehicle: children explore, investigate and try things out, while adults extend those experiences through conversation and resources.

There is a balance between activities planned by staff and opportunities that children initiate themselves. Learning builds on what a child already knows and enjoys, making individual interests part of the teaching rather than an extra. Indoor and outdoor experiences both count, and outdoor learning continues across different weather conditions. Wellington boots stay at nursery, while spare clothes make messy play practical.

Observations and photographs build up an individual learning journey, which may be kept on paper or online. Parents can discuss it with the keyworker and teacher throughout the year and contribute experiences from home. This gives families a way to follow learning beyond a finished picture or something their child remembers to mention.

Care and Support

A class teacher and a Level 3 Nursery Nurse form the nursery's staffing structure, with additional Early Years practitioners used as needed for group ratios. Keyworkers each have an allocated group and contribute to planning, assessment and records. A familiar adult therefore has a defined role in following each child's development.

Contact with families includes conversations before and after sessions, email, telephone calls and consultation sessions, alongside an annual written report. Children with SEND are supported through individual learning plans. Families can share special educational needs, an EHCP or involvement with external agencies when registering interest, giving staff relevant information early.

Fruit and milk are provided daily without charge, with families given instructions for applying for milk. Children staying through lunch bring a packed lunch; chocolate bars and fizzy drinks are excluded. A named water bottle comes every day. For prescribed medication, the nursery requires a care plan, risk assessment and signed medicine form before accepting it, with arrangements agreed individually.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no priority under the 2027/8 oversubscription criteria. A separate application is required. For September 2027 entry, parents complete their home local authority's common application form and return it by 15 January 2027. Milton Keynes Council coordinates Reception admissions for the school.

Continuity in learning is a separate matter. Nursery staff share the child's learning journey with the Reception teacher. For children with SEND, transition arrangements can be tailored: extra meetings with the new teacher, classroom visits and photographs for a transition booklet are possible ways to make the next setting more familiar. These support a change of class; they do not change admission entitlement.

Practical Information

Five morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am and correspond to 15 funded hours. The afternoon pattern also comprises five sessions and 15 funded hours, running from 12.00pm to 3.00pm. Five full-day sessions run from 8.30am to 3.00pm with 30 funded hours; the optional lunch break from 11.30am to 12.00pm attracts an additional charge. Ask the school for current charges before choosing that arrangement.

Register interest using the nursery registration form; the school then contacts families nearer the time about whether their application has succeeded. Uniform includes black or navy jogging bottoms or leggings, a light-coloured polo shirt and black closed shoes with Velcro fastening. Branded polo shirts are optional, and Maisie's in Wolverton supplies them and book bags. Named spare clothing, including socks and underwear, stays in a drawstring bag on the child's peg.
