Explorers Class gives Watling Primary School’s nursery its name, and exploration shapes the learning: play, early STEAM thinking and Forest School all feature. This is the school’s own nursery in Whitehouse, Milton Keynes, with an outdoor space specifically for nursery children. It has no Ofsted graded rating yet.
For September 2027 entry, the intake covers children born between 1st September 2023 and 31st August 2024. Availability. The nursery is fully subscribed for the 2026-2027 academic year. Families seeking that intake can join the waiting list, but doing so does not guarantee a nursery place.
Play is the starting point. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) approach combines children’s exploration with brief teaching sessions covering maths, phonics, literacy and topic work. Children use both outdoor and indoor learning spaces, while practitioners join their play and introduce support or challenge as opportunities arise. Adult teaching and children’s own investigations sit alongside each other.
STEAM brings science, technology, engineering, arts and maths into that play. Children are encouraged to try ideas, make predictions, investigate and explain their thinking. Adults extend vocabulary and help children connect ideas, so an activity can become an opportunity to talk through how something works.
Mondays bring Active Learning; Wednesdays are Forest School days for Explorers. Forest School uses practical exploration and supported risk-taking, giving children opportunities to make choices and work together outdoors. Waterproofs and wellies belong in the kit bag.
Books have a physical home in the class library. The nursery’s Top 30 Books selection mixes poetry, non-fiction and fiction, with children encountering the collection during their nursery time. Daily reading at home is encouraged, including being read to. Optional STEAM Challenges offer another connection between home and nursery, with families choosing which activities to attempt.
Lunch begins at 11:30am for children staying through the day. The full-day pattern includes lunch, and the lunchtime session carries an additional charge. Families should contact the school for current charges when planning their childcare budget.
For additional needs, the school’s SENCo can be contacted at senco@watlingprimary.org.uk. Watling aims to adapt learning to children’s needs, using reasonable adjustments where required. This gives parents a named role to approach when discussing support. Nursery STEAM Challenge work can also be shared through Tapestry or brought into school, allowing families to contribute examples of learning at home.
Attending Watling’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the deadline for their child’s entry year.
For the September 2026 intake, applications went through the Milton Keynes City Council Citizens Portal, with a deadline of 15th January 2026. That cycle is now past. Treat the nursery choice and the later Reception application as separate decisions.
