Singing and focused language activities give Torrisholme’s nursery a clear emphasis: helping young children communicate. This is the nursery class at Morecambe and Heysham Torrisholme Community Primary School, on Low Lane in Morecambe. It opened in February 2025 for three- and four-year-olds, placing preschool provision within the primary school itself.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 July 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating. For parents, the useful detail lies in the combination of communication work, children’s engagement with routines and a specific curriculum improvement requirement.
Communication is a concrete part of learning here. In July 2025, nursery children took part in singing and language activities directed at particular needs. These give children opportunities to practise expressing themselves, making language development something they actively do rather than simply a curriculum heading. For a parent weighing up preschool provision, that emphasis is a useful feature to consider.
Within the early years foundation stage (EYFS), routines also shape children’s experience. In July 2025, children followed the routines and stayed attentive during activities. Alongside the nursery’s communication work, this gives a picture of children learning to participate in an organised group setting. Both speaking and taking part matter in the preschool day.
Curriculum development. Some early years content needed clearer decisions about the knowledge children should acquire and the order in which it should be taught. In July 2025, this meant learning did not consistently build sufficiently on what children already knew. Parents should weigh the practical language activities alongside that concern about the progression of learning.
Targeted language activities are relevant to children who need help with communication. The nursery’s emphasis on this work in July 2025 provides a concrete example of support woven into learning activities. For families thinking about their child’s speech and language development, this is a useful starting point when considering the provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Lancashire County Council decides the school’s admissions, so choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions. Keep the Reception application in your family’s plans even after accepting a nursery place.
