Explorers gives Felton’s nursery its identity: nursery and Reception sit within the same named class, with a class teacher covering both. This is school-based provision for three-year-olds at Felton Church of England Primary School, on Mouldshaugh Lane in Felton. For parents, the defining feature is that nursery belongs within the school’s early-years class structure, rather than being a separate stage with its own class name.
Learning has a named framework. The school bases its curriculum endpoints on Chris Quigley Essentials, with EYFS forming the first of four milestones. Its Learning Journeys use that curriculum’s content, and progression planning includes returning to earlier learning. The practical implication is a connection between the early-years starting point and the school’s later learning sequence.
Explorers’ curriculum themes include Space Quest for spring 2025, alongside The Gingerbread Man & Christmas in 2024 and Walking Through the Jungle in autumn 2024. Those names give the learning a recognisable focus, from space to familiar stories and jungle themes.
In July 2023, early-years children enjoyed having stories read aloud, while adults demonstrated the language they wanted children to use. Listening and adult conversation therefore feature in the early-years learning picture, giving children examples of spoken language as well as stories to enjoy.
Warm relationships with adults were an early-years strength in July 2023. For a child starting nursery, that matters alongside the learning itself: adult interaction is part of the experience, rather than simply supervision around activities.
The headteacher also holds the special educational needs coordinator and lead safeguarding roles. Deputy safeguarding leads provide further points of contact within the school’s team. Families with concerns about their child or wider family circumstances are invited to contact the school to discuss further help. This gives parents a direct route into a conversation about support, including when concerns extend beyond classroom learning.
A separate application matters. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply again through the normal Reception process and meet the relevant deadline; nursery attendance should never be treated as a substitute for that application.
Northumberland County Council administers the initial Reception admissions, with applications directed through its online portal for first and primary school places. Explorers’ shared nursery and Reception class structure is a feature of the children’s school experience. Keep that educational arrangement separate from the allocation of a school place.
