At a Glance

Three-hour sessions and a class called Indigo give this nursery its shape: a school-based start with time for play, conversation and adult-led learning. Morpeth All Saints Church of England First School has 52 nursery places at its Lancaster Park site in Morpeth. Indigo forms part of the school's early years provision.

There is an important distinction between care and teaching here. In May 2026, Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Needs attention. Children were comfortable with adults and enjoyed attending, but the new curriculum needed further development. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.

The Nursery Day

Children's interests help determine topics, with play they initiate themselves sitting alongside activities directed by adults. Group and whole-class work introduces early skills in mathematics, reading and writing. This gives children both room to pursue an interest and time to learn together.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) organises learning around seven areas. For parents, that means developing movement, conversation and emotional confidence alongside early literacy, number work, creative expression and understanding the world. Activities respond to children's individual interests and needs, rather than following one fixed task for everyone.

Counting, matching and sorting are part of mathematical learning. Early writing starts with making marks, listening and talking, while imaginative play, dance, music and art provide ways to express ideas. Learning involves activity and exploration outdoors as well as inside.

In May 2026, phonics teaching was secure, and adults taught effectively during small-group carpet activities. Independent learning was less consistent: adults too frequently missed chances to ask questions that extended children's thinking. Embedding the new curriculum and improving those conversations were explicit priorities. Leadership changes had also delayed early years development. For families, the useful distinction is between effective guided activities and play that still needed more purposeful adult involvement.

Care and Support

Warm adult-child relationships were a strength in May 2026. Children spoke comfortably with staff and felt protected and at ease. Settling was supported through cooperation with families and other nurseries, helping adults understand children before and during their move into school. Additional needs were recognised promptly, with support tailored to the child.

Tapestry connects home with learning. Children's records include photographs, observations and examples from both self-chosen play and adult-directed activities; parents can add their own contributions. This gives families a way to share interests and development beyond the classroom.

Staffing includes a nursery practitioner qualified at Level 6 who also holds a higher level teaching assistant role. Early years staff have completed paediatric first aid training lasting 12 hours. A school SEND coordinator oversees special educational needs and disability provision, providing a further point of support for children who need adjustments.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Northumberland's local authority admissions process and meet the deadline for their child's intake. Treat that application as a distinct step, even if your child already attends Indigo.

Settling support and positive relationships can help a child become familiar with school life. They do not secure an admissions outcome.

Practical Information

Five morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am, with five afternoon sessions from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Nursery applications are welcomed for autumn, spring or summer entry. Contact the school on 01670 512803, extension 4, for an application or to arrange a visit at an agreed time.

Dawn to Dusk, a separate private nursery on the same site, provides wraparound care and additional nursery sessions. Families seeking the government's 30-hour childcare provision are directed through the school office to local nurseries offering it. Distinguish those arrangements from the school's own morning and afternoon sessions when planning childcare.

Access. The nursery entrance has a single step. Families using mobility equipment should factor that entrance into their visit and daily journey.
