Pumpkin soup becomes a language lesson in Rothbury’s early years: children learn words for preparing ingredients while doing something practical. That gives this school nursery its clearest character, with play and conversation working together rather than learning being confined to formal tasks.
Rothbury First School has its own nursery in Rothbury, Northumberland. At the Ofsted inspection on 8 and 9 October 2024, the school’s early years provision was judged Good. This is an early years judgement within the school inspection, covering more than the nursery alone.
Mornings run from 8.45am to 11.45am. For families, that means a defined morning session and an early finish to plan around. Children are asked to be there for the start.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) is the learning framework here. In October 2024, its curriculum was carefully planned, children enjoyed learning and they could remain absorbed in their play. Adults used activities and discussion to develop children’s language. The pumpkin-soup example makes that concrete: preparing ingredients introduced vocabulary for grating, cutting and chopping. Practical activity gave the words a purpose.
The important combination is sustained play and adult involvement. Children had time to concentrate, while staff helped them express more through conversation. For a parent weighing up the nursery day, this is useful evidence of how learning happens, beyond the session’s start and finish times.
New starters can take part in introductory nursery sessions, and stay-and-play opportunities take place through the year. These give children a chance to become familiar with nursery and parents an opportunity to share in the experience.
Staffing includes an EYFS teacher and a lead early years teaching assistant. A special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) provides a contact for families with concerns about additional needs. Parents can also arrange a discussion with their child’s class teacher during the year.
Milk is free for nursery children until the term in which they turn five. Before a child starts, families provide information about allergies, dietary needs and health requirements, alongside emergency contacts. Keeping those details current helps staff respond to individual care needs.
Medication requires a discussion with the co-headteachers and a completed permission form. Where a child needs ongoing medication, arrangements can be made with parents. Child-protection training continues through the year, and staff must pass concerns to the designated safeguarding lead.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. The school handles nursery admissions, while Northumberland County Council manages Reception admissions. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal local-authority route by the normal deadline.
Treat that application as a separate task when planning your child’s next step. Nursery enrolment does not replace it.
The nursery morning finishes at 11.45am, so families need to plan care beyond that point. Report a nursery absence by calling school before 9.00am.
