Otter Class gives Stannington First School’s nursery its own identity within the school. Based on Church Road in Stannington, this is school-managed provision, with a Nursery Lead Practitioner and an early years Learning Support Assistant among the staff team. Nursery enquiries go directly to the school, giving families a distinct starting point for arranging a visit.
Active learning and conversation are the clearest features of the early years experience. In November 2022, Ofsted found that frequent exchanges with adults helped children develop confidence, while activities gave them a clear purpose and encouraged enthusiastic participation. The implication for parents is concrete: interaction with staff was part of the learning itself, helping children feel ready to join in.
At the November 2022 inspection, learning began with manageable steps: curriculum goals were divided into smaller stages from early years, helping children build understanding gradually. The youngest children also participated in familiar rhymes and stories. Together, these findings described an early years experience built around involvement and growing confidence, with adults supporting children as they learned.
A Nursery Lead Practitioner provides a nursery-specific role within the team, alongside support staff working in early years. For children with additional needs, the school uses individual plans covering health, behaviour or education, according to the child’s circumstances. Regular reviews check how closely support and resources match those needs. Families can contact the SEND Coordinator to discuss provision for their child.
Safeguarding has a defined team structure: three staff members have additional training as Designated Safeguarding Leads. Staff and governors undertake safeguarding and child protection training, reviewed each school year. CPOMS provides a secure system for recording concerns, and the school works with other agencies when needed. These arrangements give families an identified route for raising a concern and staff a shared means of recording it.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal local authority process and meet its deadline. Northumberland County Council manages Reception admissions, while the school handles nursery admissions. Treat these as two separate decisions: choosing Otter Class is a choice about nursery provision, rather than an assurance of a later school place.
Nursery children arrive at 8.45 a.m. Collection takes place at the classroom’s front-of-school door, giving families a specific collection point rather than the yard used by other children.
Visits can be arranged by contacting the school. For nursery enquiries, telephone 01670 789276 or email admin@stannington.northumberland.sch.uk.
For the journey, the school encourages walking, cycling or scooting, including completing part of a car journey on foot. Families driving are asked to use the nearby church or village hall car parks. Cycle and scooter parking, plus helmet storage, support those travelling on wheels; bikes and scooters must be pushed on school grounds.
