Three hours in the morning, three in the afternoon, or a longer day: Malden Manor’s nursery gives families distinct attendance patterns rather than one fixed daily commitment. It belongs to Malden Manor Primary and Nursery School on Sheephouse Way in New Malden and caters for children aged three and four. The practical choice is between five shorter sessions each week and five full days.
Children normally join in September after turning three. Spring or summer entry depends on spaces being available, so the starting point can differ between families.
Language is a concrete strength of the early years provision. At the inspection on 15 and 16 November 2023, Ofsted found that adults developed children’s speech through their conversations and that the early years curriculum had suitable resources across its learning areas. Children were interested in the activities and enjoyed taking part. For parents, the useful detail is the adult’s role: interaction supports learning, rather than leaving children to use resources alone.
A shorter session lasts three hours. Morning children attend from 8:30am until 11:30am; the afternoon runs from 12:30pm until 3:30pm. Lunch Club occupies the hour between them. For children attending longer days, this creates a distinct lunchtime break between the two nursery sessions.
Lunch needs planning alongside attendance. Children on the 30-hour pattern are booked into Lunch Club automatically, with a hot meal available to purchase on a weekly basis. Other nursery children aged three or four can use the club when families give at least 24 hours’ notice. Their hot-meal choice must be supplied with the booking.
An emergency booking made that day requires a packed lunch. That is a useful distinction for families arranging occasional lunchtime care: a last-minute place does not come with the same meal arrangements as an advance booking. Meal payments are due before the meal is provided, and the office can arrange access to Tucasi for online payments.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no admissions priority at Malden Manor. A separate Reception application is required through the Royal Borough of Kingston local authority’s normal admissions process. Families should make that application by the normal deadline, independently of their nursery booking. Choosing nursery hours and applying for school are separate decisions.
The booking model is five mornings, five afternoons or full-time attendance from 8:30am to 2:30pm on five days each week. An additional paid hour extends attendance from 2:30pm to 3:30pm. This matters when matching collection to work: the funded full-time pattern ends earlier than the afternoon session.
Universal places provide 15 funded hours weekly, while eligible working families can access the extended 30-hour entitlement. The funding description uses 38 weeks per year. Hours beyond a family’s entitlement attract charges. A family using universal funding for a full-time place pays for the remaining five sessions each week and the additional hour; for the 30-hour pattern, funding is allocated to 8:30am to 2:30pm and the later hour is charged separately. Ask the school for current charges, including Lunch Club and hot meals.
Nursery applications use the school’s application form. Enquiries can go to schooloffice@maldenmanor.rbksch.org or 020 8337 9620. The address is Sheephouse Way, New Malden, KT3 5PF. Children do not attend on INSET days, so include staff-training closures when planning childcare.
