Afternoon sessions and two longer days shape nursery life at Muskham Primary School in North Muskham. Foundation Stage 1 is the school's part-time provision for children aged 3 and 4, placing their first school routines within its Foundation setting.
The session capacity was a maximum of 20 children in January 2025. That is a nursery session figure, rather than the size of the whole school, and gives families a useful sense of the provision's scale.
Acorns' Class is the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) class. Practical independence is an explicit goal in Foundation: children work towards managing their coat, putting their book bag in its basket and preparing themselves for the day. These small jobs make independence concrete.
For early years, the school aims to develop communication, language and early reading alongside curiosity, resilience and independence. Its 2026-2028 plans include developing outdoor learning and adult-child interactions. These are development priorities, rather than a description of completed changes.
Books also connect classroom and home. Foundation children can borrow recommended reading that explores inclusion and diversity, giving families something to share beyond the session itself.
Settling into Foundation allows for different starting points. Adults may accompany their child into the classroom and help with routines; staff support children who find separation difficult. The aim is gradual independence, so children are working towards doing these everyday tasks themselves rather than being expected to manage immediately.
Collection has a clear handover process. Foundation children leave from the classroom door, with staff releasing them individually to their collecting adult. If someone unfamiliar is collecting, a parent must arrange a password in person through the office. When children transfer to childcare workers, staff pass on important information directly, including minor injuries and head bumps.
At school level, the kitchen team accommodates medical diets and religious requirements when families notify the office in writing. Preferences alone do not prompt menu changes. Current meal charges should be checked with the school. For inclusion in learning, the school says it adapts teaching around children's needs, including SEND, and uses interventions when progress needs additional support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process; Nottinghamshire County Council manages the school's admissions beyond Foundation Stage 1. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
The practical independence developed in Foundation is useful preparation for a child's next stage. It is separate from the allocation of a school place.
Afternoons run Monday to Friday, from 1.00pm to 3.25pm. Whole days are offered on Thursdays and Fridays only, from 8:50am to 3:25pm. An afternoon counts as one session and a whole day as two. The standard pattern requires at least four sessions and allows up to five; families eligible for the 30-hour entitlement can access all sessions.
Universal funding provides 15 hours a week during term time for children aged 3 and 4. Unused hours can be taken at another setting. Access to the extended entitlement requires an eligibility code.
To register interest, contact the office on 01636 702254 or use the nursery enquiry form, identifying your preferred sessions. For travel by car, families are asked to use the Muskham Rural Community Centre or Muskham Ferry car parks. Nelson Lane is the school's sole pupil entrance.
