Nursery at NCEA Grace Darling CofE Primary School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Familiar stories, repeated rhymes and learning to talk give Grace Darling’s nursery its character. Reading preparation begins here through books and rhymes revisited over time, giving young children repeated encounters with language before formal reading teaching begins.

The provision belongs to NCEA Grace Darling CofE Primary School in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea. Its Early Years Centre accepts children aged two and three, with a maximum of 20 children per morning session and 20 per afternoon session. The nursery normally admits children in the term following their third birthday. These are distinct entry arrangements within the school’s early years provision, so the centre’s session capacity should not be read as the nursery’s total number of places.

The Nursery Day

Communication is a clear focus. In July 2024, adults’ work on children’s language was effective, and the early years curriculum, including provision for two-year-olds, was carefully planned. Children enjoyed playing in environments that invited their interest, and their progress from their individual starting points was strong. For parents, the combination matters: play and developing speech sit alongside one another in the learning experience.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning, development, health and safety into one framework. Here, the clearest nursery example is the return to familiar stories and rhymes. Children encounter them repeatedly rather than moving straight on to something new. That makes early reading preparation a continuing part of nursery learning.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 2 and 3 July 2024. Writing practice. Across early years, children had too few chances to rehearse the letter formation they had been taught, and adults did not correct mistakes consistently or promptly. Parents should keep that specific concern alongside the positive findings about language and play when weighing the provision.

Care and Support

Additional support has a defined structure across the school. A qualified special educational needs and disabilities coordinator (SENDCO) leads provision, while a speech and language therapist leads speech and language teaching assistants. This gives families roles to approach when a child needs help with communication or learning.

Assess, Plan, Do, Review is the school’s process for identifying needs and adjusting support. Parents of children with SEND have termly reviews with the class teacher and/or SENDCO to discuss progress and inform subsequent teaching. The regular review cycle gives families a recurring opportunity to contribute to decisions. Concerns about a child’s welfare can be raised with any staff member.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application for primary provision through the normal admissions process; the school follows Northumberland County Council’s admissions procedures. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions. Familiarity with the school does not remove the need to apply again.

Practical Information

Morning and afternoon sessions apply to the Early Years Centre for two- and three-year-olds, with preference given to children who have local authority funding. Nursery provision is part time. Separate online application forms serve the two-year-old provision and the nursery, allowing families to use the route appropriate to their child’s stage.

Visits can be arranged by contacting the school. For enquiries, call 01670 812019 or email admingd@gracedarling.ncea.org.uk. The school is on Central Parkway, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, NE64 6RT.
