Five mornings shape the nursery week at St John the Evangelist CofE Infant and Nursery School in Newbury. The term-time pattern provides three hours each morning, with 15 funded hours across the week. For families choosing a regular morning routine, that is the practical starting point.
This is the nursery class within the Church of England infant school on Old Newtown Road. Curiosity, creativity and love are the federation’s guiding values. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its March 2025 inspection; that judgement covers early years within the school rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the curriculum framework. The federation’s curriculum intentions combine learning with social, emotional, physical and spiritual development: children are to develop independence alongside knowledge, and learn to care about other people as well as their own achievements.
Language is a concrete strength of early years. In March 2025, children used the vocabulary introduced by staff successfully when explaining their thinking. That matters beyond learning new words: it gives young children a way to communicate ideas and take part in discussion.
Social learning also has substance. Early years children formed considerate friendships and worked cooperatively with adults and other children. These are useful foundations for participating in a group and learning alongside peers.
Checking understanding. The March 2025 findings also included a school-wide weakness in recognising and correcting misunderstandings. Some pupils consequently developed gaps in learning. This was a broader teaching concern, rather than a finding stated specifically about the nursery.
Individual needs feature in the federation’s behaviour principles. These call for approaches to be adapted where a general behaviour strategy does not suit a child, with self-regulation taught rather than simply expected. For parents, the relevant principle is that children may need different support to manage their behaviour.
The same principles ask for individual plans using a therapeutic approach where necessary. They also expect parents and children to sign a Home School Agreement when joining, setting out responsibilities shared with staff. These are policy expectations, distinct from the observed early years friendships described above.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through West Berkshire local authority. Treat that application as a fresh step, rather than assuming a nursery place carries forward.
For the past 2026 admissions cycle, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That date belongs to that cycle and should not be used as a future deadline.
The funded pattern runs Monday to Friday during term time. Its morning structure matters when arranging care around the rest of the day and school holidays.
