Nursery at Chesterton Primary School

Shared books, environmental sounds and early physical development give Chesterton's youngest children concrete starting points for learning. The provision includes Pre-Nursery, welcoming children a term after their second birthday, and Nursery, admitting children in the term after they turn three. Both belong to Chesterton Primary School's early years provision, which operates under the school's registration.
For 2026-27, Nursery has 30 places across September, January and April entry points. This is the overall allocation, rather than 30 new places at each intake. The Ofsted judgement for early years was Expected standard in December 2025; it covers the school's early years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Communication gives the learning its direction. In December 2025, staff made conversations with children a priority, younger children investigated sounds around them, and children enjoyed sharing books. These are practical foundations for listening and expressing ideas. Children needing additional help with communication received focused support through time to talk sessions.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together children's language, movement and emotional development with early literacy, mathematics, creative activity and understanding their world. At Chesterton, the learning sequence was adapted to children's starting points, beginning with the two-year-old provision. Physical development had a specific purpose: helping younger children build the control needed for confident pencil use later. The emphasis is on developing the skills that make subsequent learning possible.
Parents have a part in the learning. In December 2025, regular stay and play sessions helped families understand how to support their children at home, and communication kept parents informed. That gives families a practical connection between nursery activity and learning beyond the session.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), the school's support arrangements include adapting activities, resources and adult assistance. Additional help can involve a Learning Supervisor, a personalised programme, a SEND Services Advisor or an Educational Psychologist. Decisions about this support involve consultation with children and their parents or carers. Families can arrange an appointment with the SEND leader through the school office.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place or give an application any advantage. For 2026-27, parents must make a separate application to Staffordshire School admissions at the appropriate time. Treat that application as a distinct step, even if your child is already attending Nursery.
The learning and the admissions decision serve different purposes. Early work on communication and physical development supports children's next learning steps; it does not secure their next place. Families should keep the separate Reception application in their plans from the outset.
Pre-Nursery and Nursery offer morning sessions from 8:30am to 11:30am, afternoons from noon to 3pm, and full days from 8:30am to 3pm. Pre-Nursery sessions can be paid for, with funding for either 15 or 30 hours potentially available subject to government criteria. Nursery sessions can also be paid for or supported by government funding. Contact the school for current charges.
Session preference. A requested morning or afternoon place is not guaranteed. Allocation depends on availability and the headteacher's discretion, taking account of children's needs, ages, gender balance and working parents' childcare needs. Confirm the offered pattern before organising work around it.
Visits to the Early Years department can be arranged through the school. For enquiries, contact the office on 01782 568650 or office@chestertonprimary.org.uk.
