Nursery at Benton Dene Primary School

Counting through play gives Benton Dene’s nursery its clearest character: children practise with small groups of objects until they can count accurately for themselves. Independence starts with something concrete. The nursery belongs to Benton Dene Primary School in Longbenton, on a campus shared with Benton Dene Special School; the two schools remain separate.
Nursery sits within Yellow Zone, the school’s early-years grouping. Ofsted graded early years Outstanding following its visit on 9 and 10 July 2024. That judgement covers the school’s early-years provision rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Play and purposeful learning work together here. In July 2024, nursery children developed number understanding through everyday situations as well as play, repeating counting until they could manage small quantities independently. For parents, the useful distinction is that early mathematics involves handling actual items, rather than simply reciting numbers.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) combines growing independence with language and number learning. In July 2024, children concentrated on activities both outdoors and inside, worked independently and persisted with demanding tasks. The environment supported concentration while giving children plenty to engage with. Challenge was part of the experience.
Read Write Inc is the named phonics programme used across EYFS. This gives early reading a defined teaching approach alongside the practical learning. A visit from a local farm also brought baby animals into early-years learning, connecting new knowledge with a direct experience children could discuss.
Learning to be considerate is part of the early-years experience. In July 2024, children were taught kindness towards one another and paid close attention to adults. These habits matter in a group setting: listening and consideration help children participate alongside their peers.
For special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), parents can contact the school’s SEND coordinator through the office or their child’s class teacher. This provides a clear starting point for discussing additional needs. Paper versions of website information and copies in another language can also be requested through the office.
School catering moved to Mellors Catering from the summer term of 2024, with ParentPay continuing as the payment system. These are school-wide meal arrangements, rather than a description of the nursery’s snack or lunch routine.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the relevant deadline. Treat choosing a nursery and applying for school as two distinct decisions.
Session times. The timetable gives historical morning hours of 09:00 to 12:00 and afternoon hours of 12:15 to 15:15 under its pre-COVID arrangements. Those timings describe an earlier booking pattern and should not be treated as a current childcare schedule.
Admissions information directs families to eligibility guidance for 30 hours of free childcare. This is an eligibility signpost, rather than a promise that every family qualifies.
