Nursery at Central Walker Church of England Primary School

A book corner, shared rhymes and growing independence give Central Walker’s nursery its character. In January 2025, children enjoyed books, songs and rhymes, while familiar routines helped them become more independent. These are concrete foundations for a child beginning school life: time with language, alongside learning how to manage a session.
The nursery belongs to Central Walker Church of England Primary School on Lancefield Avenue in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne. Its target intake is children whose third birthday falls on or before 31 August in their admission year. A separate playgroup also accepts children eligible for the two-year-old offer. Families should distinguish the two provisions when applying.
Books and spoken language are visible parts of nursery learning. At the inspection on 7 and 8 January 2025, nursery children enjoyed using the book corner and joining in songs and rhymes. That gives parents a specific picture of early reading here: sharing language and spending time with books.
Routines also shape the experience. In January 2025, nursery children followed them successfully and developed independence. For a young child, learning what happens next is part of becoming comfortable with school life.
Communication support adds named activities to that picture. Nursery provision includes Early Talk Boost, speech and language programmes, Makaton and visual timetables. Box Time/Special Time is also delivered regularly for children with SEND in the early years. These provide several ways to support participation, rather than relying solely on spoken instructions. Makaton combines hand signs and visual symbols with words, giving children another way to communicate.
Parents have a direct route into additional support through the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo), contacted at centralwalker.admin@neat.org.uk. The school works with families to assess needs and agree support strategies. Sharing a recent assessment or diagnosis helps staff understand the child’s support needs.
For children receiving SEN support, plans include both parent and child views. Class teachers and the SENCo agree targets, and families receive a copy of the support plan each half term before parents’ evening. Reviews and parents’ evenings provide opportunities to discuss those targets. This gives families something concrete to follow between conversations.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Newcastle City Council, using its school application form and returning it to the council. Check the council’s Reception deadline for the relevant admission year and apply by that deadline. Treat this as a separate step even if your child already attends nursery.
Nursery and playgroup applications go directly to the school; forms are obtained from and returned to it. Government funding through the local authority begins in the term after a child turns three. Playgroup sessions carry a charge payable in advance, with charges reviewed each year; eligible children can also access the two-year-old offer. Contact the school for current charges.
Nursery uniform combines a purple cardigan or sweatshirt with a gold polo neck shirt and charcoal grey bottoms. Shoes are black, and earrings are prohibited. For enquiries, contact the school office on 0191 224 0222 or email CentralWalker.admin@neat.org.uk.
