Two full days followed by a Wednesday morning give Chillingham Road’s nursery a distinctive weekly rhythm. This is a part-time nursery class with 26 places, within Chillingham Road Primary School in Heaton. It serves children aged three and four, with September entry in the academic year after their third birthday. The school’s younger Playgroup provision is a separate option.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 8 and 9 April 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Familiar books, rhymes and chances to practise new vocabulary shape early learning here. In April 2025, children across early years were becoming independent and using what they had learnt in regular activities. They joined in with well-known stories and rhymes, and developed foundations in number and literacy. For parents, the emphasis is on children taking part and using language themselves.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) includes Expressive Art & Design, with dance and music among the experiences children access. These give children ways to participate beyond spoken language. Mathematics takes a mastery approach: understanding an idea deeply matters more than memorising a shortcut. Short maths meetings revisit earlier learning; songs and chants are among the examples for early years.
Nursery geography starts close to home. Children explore caring for the Chilliverse, the school’s own term for its setting, and consider shopping and getting around Heaton. Fieldwork is another nursery topic. This makes their immediate surroundings a starting point for learning about places.
A nursery teacher and a learning support assistant form the nursery staffing structure. For children with emerging additional needs, early years staff work with the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) on identification. The NELI Assessment Tool helps identify children needing language support; the early years support list also includes Speech and Language Therapy and EEAST, a local authority team working with preschool children.
Families contribute to assessing their child’s needs. Under the school’s SEND policy, staff and parents agree adjustments, support and a review date, with parent reviews held three times a year. This gives families a defined part in deciding and revisiting support.
Physical access also matters. The 2022–2025 Accessibility Plan described a ramp at the EYFS entrance, an accessible toilet in the Early Years building, and a Speech, Language and Communication Needs intervention room for early years children and families. These are useful features for understanding the provision’s layout and support spaces.
Nursery attendance neither guarantees a Reception place nor gives admission priority. The 2026/27 admission arrangements make that separation explicit. Families must submit another application through their home local authority; Newcastle City Council’s Citizen’s Portal is the online route, with a paper alternative.
For September 2026 entry, the Reception deadline was 15 January 2026. Treat that as the dated application cycle, rather than a deadline for a later intake. Choosing the nursery and securing a school place are separate decisions.
The core nursery pattern totals 15 hours: Monday and Tuesday are full days, followed by Wednesday morning. Eligible families can use the extended entitlement through Big Playgroup, which runs on Wednesday afternoon and throughout Thursday and Friday. The nursery request form also lets families request additional sessions.
Universal provision covers 15 hours a week over 38 weeks for three- and four-year-olds, beginning after the term of the third birthday. Extended entitlement begins from the term after both conditions are met: the child has turned three and the parent or parents have a current HMRC eligibility determination with a valid childcare eligibility code.
Nursery applications go directly to the school. Contact the office on 0191 2655940 or email admin@chillingham.newcastle.sch.uk to enquire. Apply directly through the school website or school office.

No. The 2026/27 arrangements give neither priority nor a guaranteed place to nursery children. Parents must make a separate Reception application through their home local authority.
Early years staff and the SENCO collaborate on identifying needs. Language assessment and specialist services are part of the early years support provision, and families participate in assessment and reviews.
