Nursery at Dame Allan's Schools
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
A quiet space for talking, a soft toy for sharing worries and a Border Terrier give Dame Allan's nursery a distinctive connection to the Junior School's pastoral life. The nursery caters for children aged three to four at Hunter’s Road in Spital Tongues, Newcastle upon Tyne. It shares the Junior School site, so families should use that address when planning a visit.
Full-time attendance is organised around daily sessions. Alongside those sessions, regular welfare checks extend to nursery children, making attention to how a child feels part of their school experience.
The Cosy Snug provides a physical space away from classroom activity. Teachers can use it for conversations with children, while the pastoral team and counsellor use it for individual support. For a young child, that offers another setting in which to talk or take a pause.
Emotional support has concrete tools here. The Worry Monster is a soft toy that children can give written concerns to, providing a starting point for discussing anxieties. A Border Terrier attends the Junior School daily, adding animal contact to its pastoral provision. These are features of support across the Junior School, including nursery, rather than a description of a separate nursery programme.
A school nurse and dedicated counsellor are part of the team. The deputy head leads pastoral provision for children aged three to eleven and has Mental Health First Aider training. That gives families identifiable roles to approach when a child needs help.
For children with special educational needs or disabilities, families can raise needs during application and work with the school on a support plan. Referrals can also originate with parents or teachers later. Where extra help is needed, a pupil profile gives staff practical strategies. Early Years has classroom assistants, an additional staffing feature relevant to this age group.
School lunches are provided for nursery children and charged separately. Communication across Dame Allan's includes My School Portal, emailed newsletters and invitations to events, giving parents several channels for school information.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Treat Reception as a separate admissions decision: the school's route for prospective pupils starts with registration through its admissions portal and an application form.
Reception applicants have an assessment covering motor skills, sequencing, and recognition of numbers and letters. Keep that entry process distinct from the experience of attending nursery; familiarity with the school should not be treated as an offer of a place.
Funding is described as the 15-hour free early years entitlement, where available. Fees distinguish attendance with that funding from attendance without it. Ask the school for current charges, including lunches and wraparound care. Breakfast club attendance itself is free, while breakfast carries a separate charge.
After-school collection must be completed by 17:45. Repeated late collection can lead to withdrawal of the service, so this is a firm constraint for families organising work and travel.
Enquiries can go to dasadmissions@dameallans.co.uk. Personal tours can be arranged, and the next listed Junior School and Nursery open day is 13 March 2027. A visit offers families a chance to see the nursery before applying.
