Nursery at Farne Primary School
Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.
A morning, an afternoon or a full day: Farne’s nursery offers three weekday patterns, with full-time places dependent on a 30-hour childcare code. That gives families a concrete choice about how much of the day their child spends here.
The nursery belongs to Farne Primary School’s Early Years provision in Newbiggin Hall, on Marsden Lane. It offers 52 part-time places, with a full-time option for eligible children. Preschool places include children who have turned three, with January and April entry dependent on space.
Learning to share space and play with other children is part of the early-years experience. At the July 2024 inspection, children were developing the ability to cooperate in play, share resources and wait for their turn. These are practical foundations for taking part in a group.
Early learning also includes comparing past and present. In July 2024, children in early years were learning to recognise differences between the two, giving them an introduction to thinking about change.
Lunch is a choice for children attending full time: families can send a healthy packed lunch or choose a paid school meal. The meal charge therefore needs to be considered alongside the childcare arrangement. Contact the school for current charges.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), support includes individual plans identifying needs, targets and the resources to use. Parents, children and relevant staff contribute to creating and reviewing those plans, so families have a role in deciding what support looks like.
Three progress meetings or reviews take place each year, sometimes alongside parent consultations; involved professionals may also attend. The school uses an assess, plan, do, review cycle overseen by its SEND coordinator. This gives families recurring opportunities to discuss progress and adjustments.
SMART Multi Academy Trust’s SEND coordinators exchange resources and expertise. Where further equipment, facilities or specialist input are needed, the school works with external partners, which may include health professionals. Parents can raise concerns about provision or progress with their child’s class teacher or the SEND coordinator.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Newcastle City Council’s online Reception admissions route, meeting the deadline for their child’s entry year. Treat that application as a separate task from arranging nursery attendance.
Transition support for children with SEND covers both the move from preschool into nursery and the later move into Reception. That support concerns the child’s change of setting; it does not secure an admission offer.
Morning places run Monday to Friday, 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoon places run noon to 3pm. The full-time option runs Monday to Friday, 8.45am to 3pm, and requires a 30-hour childcare code. These fixed patterns give parents specific collection times to plan around.
Doors open to nursery at 8.40am. Between 8.45am and 3pm, families use either the Nursery Gate or the Key Stage 1 Gate; lunchtime collections and drop-offs use the Nursery Gate.
Nursery applications are handled by the school office, which supplies the application form. Families can also arrange an Early Years tour and speak with staff before applying: telephone 0191 2860268 or email admin.fps@smartacademies.net.
