Making bread together captures the practical character of Hazlewood’s early years: children learn a skill, try it for themselves and work with someone else. At the inspection on 13 and 14 March 2023, Ofsted found that early years children developed independence and confidence through teaching followed by opportunities to practise.
The nursery belongs to Hazlewood Community Primary School in Wideopen, on Canterbury Way. Its team includes a nursery teacher and nursery teaching assistants, alongside staff with wider early years roles. For families, this places the nursery within a school team while retaining roles specifically devoted to nursery children.
Practice gives learning a purpose. In March 2023, adults demonstrated skills and children had opportunities to use what they had been taught. The bread-making example involved a pair of children cooperating over a recipe. It brings together following instructions, doing a practical task and working towards a shared result. Independence develops through participation.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) learning also includes exploring the immediate world. Children compare materials, objects and places, then talk about their surroundings and how environments differ. These are concrete starting points for understanding geography: noticing what is similar, explaining what is different and connecting learning to familiar places.
Floor robots provide a physical resource for programming from the early years onwards. They give computing a practical form, rather than making it solely an activity on a screen. Personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) includes learning to identify emotions and express feelings in language suited to children’s age. Learning therefore includes talking about how children feel as well as exploring the world around them.
Everyday care questions have a route into family support. Hazlewood invites early years families to discuss feeding, sleep, toileting and diet, with appointments arranged through the school office. Support can include directing families towards other agencies. This gives parents somewhere to raise routines that affect both home life and their child’s participation in nursery.
For special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), communication includes review meetings, informal conversations and parents’ evenings. Parents can initiate those discussions, as can teachers or external professionals. The SENCO contact is hazlewoodsenco@ntlp.org.uk. Families can use that route to begin a conversation about additional needs and support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as separate decisions; being part of the school’s early years provision does not itself secure the next place.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 0191 917 8545 or email office@hazlewoodprimary.co.uk. The school’s address is Canterbury Way, Woodlands Park, Wideopen, NE13 6JJ. Paper copies of website information can be requested through the office, giving families an alternative to reading online.
