A specialist pre-school unit for up to sixteen two-year-olds gives Hilton’s youngest children a distinct starting point within the academy. Alongside it, nursery provision welcomes children in September after their third birthday, with January and April starts also possible for the full-time nursery. This is school-attached early education in Blakelaw, on Hilton Avenue.
Ofsted judged the academy’s early years provision Outstanding at its inspection on 16 and 17 September 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Learning begins with carefully sequenced knowledge and attention to vocabulary. From early years onwards, the curriculum identifies what children should learn and orders it so that later learning builds on earlier understanding. For parents, the useful emphasis is on children gaining words with which to explain their ideas, alongside developing what they know.
In September 2025, children in early years showed enthusiasm for learning, with thoughtfully selected activities and resources helping them learn successfully. Reading enjoyment also begins in early years. These are useful foundations for children’s willingness to take part and their interest in books.
The Life curriculum starts in early years too, extending learning into personal development. Outdoor learning has a physical place here: work to enhance the Early Years outdoor areas was commissioned in 2019.
Settling starts with a short meeting before the child joins. Parents meet the principal to share information, with the academy aiming to use this to tailor provision and help each child settle quickly. It gives families an early opportunity to explain their child’s needs.
For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the academy’s support model uses individual learning plans informed by assessment, professional advice and contributions from children and parents. Learning can be divided into manageable steps, with practical resources or other tools chosen to help the child take part.
Depending on need, support may involve the class teacher, other academy staff or outside professionals. Named services include Portage, the Educational Psychologist and Speech and Language Therapy, alongside hearing, visual impairment and autism specialist teams. Small-group work can focus on an individual target. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher or arrange a call or appointment with the SEND coordinator through the main office. This creates a clear route for discussing support.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal local-authority process, handled by Newcastle City Council.
For entry in the 2026–27 academic year, the application deadline was 15 January 2026. That cycle is now past. Keep the nursery place and the later school application as separate decisions: joining the nursery does not remove the need to apply again.
Full-time nursery provision has September, January and April starting points. The additional starts give families alternatives to a September beginning.
