At a Glance

Weekly cooking and school forest visits gave Monkchester Road's nursery day a practical character at the July 2025 inspection. Children practised dressing themselves for outdoor activities, building independence as they went. This maintained nursery school in Walker caters for children from two to five years old.

Ofsted's inspection on 8 and 9 July 2025 found positive relationships with key workers and children who enjoyed attending, alongside weaknesses in teaching and language development. That balance matters: children settled readily, but activities did not consistently deliver the learning intended for them.

The Nursery Day

Stories become something children act out. In July 2025, familiar songs, rhymes and books featured in early reading, with children dressing as Goldilocks and the bears to explore story language. Cooking took place weekly, while forest visits gave children opportunities to practise managing their clothing. Family outings included the local beach, helping parents and children discover places they could use together.

The Expressive Arts and Design curriculum includes role play in classrooms, outside and in the forest area. Musical instruments feature in daily activities, and a visiting dance teacher works with classes on Fridays. Parents are sometimes invited to watch or participate. Construction toys and everyday materials are also used for creative work, giving children tangible ways to try out ideas.

For learning at home, Houses and Homes supplies a room-design drawing template, household vocabulary and activity challenge cards. A separate sheet asks children to design and label a new room; another lists familiar objects such as a rug, sink, lamp and spoon. These offer parents specific prompts for drawing and talking together. The same topic introduces respect for people's homes, connecting everyday surroundings with consideration for others. These are home resources, rather than a timetable of nursery activities.

Teaching and choice. In July 2025, staff did not consistently adapt teaching to children's needs, and some assessments failed to establish what children understood. Staff also lacked sufficient expertise to teach the curriculum and plan activities that helped children learn. Inspectors required clearer guidance for staff across every learning area. Adult interactions did too little to expand children's vocabulary. Opportunities to pursue personal interests and sustain independent play were also restricted by an emphasis on completing tasks. For families, the useful question is how an activity develops learning and leaves room for a child's own ideas.

Care and Support

Key workers provide a familiar relationship. In July 2025, these bonds helped children settle and feel secure; predictable routines helped them understand the day. Staff supported sharing and turn-taking with gentle prompts. Healthy eating was discussed during snacks, while stories returned to road and water safety across the year.

Parents can share examples of their child's behaviour at home through Class Dojo. Photographs in the main building's foyer illustrate the nursery's values. Parent Guides, available through the key worker or office, include help with counting; themed storybooks address bereavement, family separation and becoming an older sibling. These give families concrete starting points for conversations at home.

Additional needs. In July 2025, SEND needs were recognised promptly and staff sought advice from specialists, including speech and language therapists. However, weaknesses in communication teaching meant some children did not receive the support they needed, limiting their progress.

Safeguarding procedures. Safeguarding was effective in July 2025, but adult checks varied in consistency and timing. Staff did not reliably follow every procedure, including safeguarding record keeping, creating a risk that important information would be collected or recorded late.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet its deadline. Treat choosing this nursery and applying for a primary school place as separate decisions.
