Learning through play, with communication given deliberate attention, shapes the early years experience at St Paul's. The nursery caters for three- and four-year-olds within the Church of England primary school on Victoria Street, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It is school nursery provision, with its early years work assessed within the school inspection.
At the Ofsted inspection on 3 and 4 June 2025, early years provision was graded Good. That judgement covers the school's early years provision as a whole; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Exploration is the starting point. The early years curriculum follows the Early Years Framework and Development Matters, updated in 2021. In parent language, this framework involves activities that help children practise their learning and develop communication, including sharing ideas and explaining what they need. Adults demonstrate how to approach activities and give support suited to individual needs. Assessment helps staff plan the learning children encounter.
Play has a clear learning purpose. In June 2025, children in early years used carefully planned activities to practise and consolidate their learning. Communication receives direct adult support, including signing for children who use it to share ideas or express what they need. That gives those children a means of taking part.
The EYFS timetable divides learning into morning and afternoon blocks, separated by lunch. Its morning runs from 8:50 to 12:00, with the afternoon from 13:00 to 15:20. These are useful reference points for understanding the school day's shape.
Signing is a concrete example of communication support in early years. For a child who uses signs, being able to explain a need matters alongside joining in learning. Staff support this way of communicating rather than relying solely on speech.
The school's SEND offer recognises individual needs and the additional help children may require. It also directs families to Newcastle's SEND Local Offer, giving parents a route to information about local provision. In June 2025, safeguarding arrangements across the school were effective. This is a school-wide finding.
Reception requires another application. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a place at St Paul's. Nursery applications go to the school, while Reception applications go through the local authority. Families must apply separately through that route by the applicable deadline.
The criteria listed on the school's admissions page do not include nursery attendance, so attendance itself confers no priority under that list. Keep the application separate from the nursery decision. Reception forms can be obtained from the child's nursery or the school office and returned to the School's Admissions Department at Newcastle Civic Centre.
Applications for the nursery are handled directly by the school: collect a form from the office and return it there. The office can be contacted on 0191 2733667 or at admin@stpauls.newcastle.sch.uk.
The EYFS timetable places lunch between 12:00 and 13:00 and ends the day at 15:20. Treat its morning and afternoon blocks as timetable information rather than confirmation of separately bookable nursery sessions.
