At a Glance

A garden for learning in all weathers, daily stories and time alongside older children give Stamfordham’s preschool a distinctly school-connected character. The provision takes children aged 2 to 4 and sits within Stamfordham Primary School’s Early Years Unit. Children become accustomed to school surroundings while still following a curriculum built around early childhood.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 11 and 12 July 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school. In July 2024, children’s cooperation and enthusiasm for learning were marked strengths, with older children providing examples for the youngest to follow.

The Nursery Day

Play and planned teaching work together here. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum brings together language, relationships, physical skills and early learning about books, numbers and the world. Activities respond to children’s interests, giving them opportunities to test ideas as well as follow an adult’s lead.

Reading has a clear daily rhythm. Read, Write, Inc. sessions begin with listening, rhyme, listening walks and recognising initial sounds. Drop Everything And Read (DEAR) time adds shared stories, while reading corners in the preschool and outdoors let children choose books independently. These are different routes into the same habit: listening closely and enjoying language.

White Rose maths uses objects alongside pictures and more abstract ideas. Games give children practice with shape, number and measurement. Funky Fingers activities and Squiggle When You Wiggle sessions develop control and coordination, linking movement with the hand skills needed for later writing.

The preschool has its own garden, and children use indoor and outdoor provision daily. Beyond the Early Years outdoor space, learning can draw on the school’s woods, pond and playing field. Sand and water exploration, planting and large construction give children practical ways to investigate. Code-a-pillars introduce problem solving through technology; baking and seasonal village walks connect learning with everyday experience.

Care and Support

A preschool lead works with a preschool staff team within the wider Early Years structure. The July 2024 inspection found that individual needs shaped staff’s approach from the outset. Close relationships with children and families supported early recognition of learning difficulties. For a child needing additional help, that makes the adult response an important part of the day.

Children are assessed during their first few weeks. Where support is needed, targets are shared with parents, the SENCO and Early Years staff, then addressed through focused activities and small steps. Reviews allow support to change, and referrals for specialist help require parental consent. The Northumberland School Readiness Passport also supports assessment, including checks for two-year-olds.

Parent involvement begins on the child’s first preschool day. The school says familiar surroundings help children settle when they later move into its primary provision. School meals are prepared on site, and Early Years children share healthy snacks. Emailed school updates reach parents every two weeks.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the normal deadline. Routine applications go online through Northumberland County Council.

Familiarity and admission are separate matters. Being within the primary school gives preschool children experience of its surroundings and contact with older children. Older pupils also visit Early Years to share books. These connections help make school life familiar; they do not secure a place.

Practical Information

Preschool offers full day care, with optional breakfast and after-school provision extending the day from 7.45am to 5.30pm. Breakfast Club runs from 7.45am to 8.50am and includes breakfast; After School Club operates from 3.10pm to 5.30pm. Activities include cookery, crafts and sport.

Kidzone bookings and payments use Arbor. Sessions can be booked up to 24 hours before their start; later requests go through the office and depend on availability. This gives families a clear booking route for the additional care.

Government-funded education and childcare are offered for two-year-olds, alongside 30 hours for children aged 3 and 4. Funding applications go through the government route. To enquire about preschool or arrange a visit, email admin@stamfordham.northumberland.sch.uk or telephone 01661 886358.
