Nursery at Throckley Primary School

Books, songs and practical number activities give Throckley’s early years its character: children learn a skill, then get opportunities to try it independently. Provision begins with Acorns for two-year-olds, alongside Rising 3s and the 30-Hours Nursery. Acorns uses the nursery within the main school building, and Rising 3s is also based in that building. These are school-based preschool options with different attendance patterns.
The 30-Hours Nursery has 45 places per year group. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery inspection.
Number learning takes place indoors and outdoors. In January 2025, early years children encountered numbers through stories, singing and practical tasks, giving them different ways to explore the same idea. Teaching also gave children opportunities to use newly learned skills independently. The balance matters: adult teaching is followed by a chance to put learning into practice.
The early years foundation stage (EYFS) here combines learning with the routines of being in a group. Expectations are taught from the beginning of early years and applied consistently. For a young child, learning what happens next sits alongside learning new skills.
For Nursery, the day runs from 8.40am until 3.10pm, with lunch between 11.30am and noon. Acorns has separate morning and afternoon groups on weekdays, so its attendance pattern differs from the longer Nursery day.
Settling was a strength in January 2025: children adjusted quickly, including those starting in the provision for two-year-olds, and made strong progress from their starting points. This is useful reassurance for families considering a first experience of group care.
A Pre-School Leader also works as a Nursery Teacher. Across the school, the support structure includes a SENDCO who is also the Mental Health Champion, plus a School Welfare Officer. The SENDCO holds the NASC qualification, awarded in December 2020.
Support for additional needs is individual. The school provides resources and provision according to each child’s needs, and families can contact the SENDCO through the office. This gives parents a direct route to discuss support rather than treating every child’s needs as the same.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet its deadline. The route is Newcastle City Council School Admissions; the Family Information Service also handles enquiries. Choosing the nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions, even though both concern the same school.
Acorns runs Monday to Friday, with morning and afternoon groups. Rising 3s offers both part-time and full-time places: funded 15-hour attendance can be supplemented with paid hours, while funded 30-hour places depend on family eligibility. Ask the school for current charges for paid hours.
Contact the School Office on 0191 267 5311 for a nursery application. The office sends an invitation to Applicaa, the electronic application system, and applications require a child’s birth certificate and proof of address. School visits can be booked by telephone, giving families an opportunity to see the setting before choosing it.
