At a Glance

A morning place or a day ending at 3:15pm: Westerhope's nursery changed its offer from September 2026, giving families two Monday-to-Friday patterns. The nursery has 39 places within Westerhope Primary School. It is the school's own early years provision, so families can consider the nursery day alongside the school's support services.

The September 2026 intake covers children born between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023. That is a specific intake cohort, rather than the primary school's full age range.

The Nursery Day

Both attendance patterns begin at 8:45am. Children taking a 15-hour place finish at 11:45am, while the 30-hour offer ends at 3:15pm. For parents, the practical distinction is between collecting before midday and arranging an afternoon collection. The start time stays the same.

These patterns run from Monday to Friday, giving the week a consistent attendance rhythm. A morning place means an earlier handover back to family care; the longer pattern extends attendance into the afternoon. Choose the pattern around the collection time your household can sustain across five days.

Care and Support

Early years has an EYFS leader, and the school team includes a nursery teacher, a nursery nurse and teaching assistants with EYFS roles. Those are distinct responsibilities within the staffing structure. The EYFS leader also holds a deputy designated safeguarding role.

Support for additional needs connects families with the school's special educational needs coordinator. The role includes coordinating provision, helping identify needs and liaising with parents and outside professionals, including educational psychologists. This gives parents a contact for discussing support that involves more than the nursery classroom alone. Contact is through admin@westerhope.newcastle.sch.uk or 0191 267 4750.

For children learning English as an additional language, the school tracks both English acquisition and curriculum progress. Classroom support can include translated materials, visual prompts and intervention to develop communication and vocabulary, according to the child's needs. The implication is practical: language support can change how a child accesses classroom learning.

A pastoral lead and behaviour support officer also work with families, teachers and pupils. Welfare concerns can be discussed with the pastoral lead. Across the school, the accessibility aim covers parent information as well as the curriculum and learning environment.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route by the applicable deadline. Treat that application as a separate step in planning your child's next year, even when you want them to remain at Westerhope.

Practical Information
