Clapping the syllables in fruit and vegetable names gives Westmoor's nursery learning a concrete starting point: three-year-olds developing an ear for language through familiar words. This is the nursery at Westmoor Primary School in Killingworth, part of the school's early years provision.
Ofsted judged early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 22 and 23 October 2024. That judgement covers the school's early years, rather than a separately graded nursery. Children made exceptional progress, with learning closely adapted to their individual needs. For parents, that combination puts children's development ahead of a single pace for the class.
Early reading begins in the Nursery Year. The syllable-clapping activity gives children practice in hearing the parts of words before reading them. It is a small, specific example of how early literacy takes shape here, rather than a claim about formal reading lessons for every nursery child.
The early years curriculum follows the developmental aims of Development Matters. In parent terms, the emphasis is on learning that fits children's stage of development; in October 2024, activities addressed individual needs closely. Early years classrooms provided safe, welcoming spaces for that learning.
The wider school grounds include an outdoor woodland garden. Westmoor also uses The Rising Sun Country Park to extend its outdoor learning and visits the lake beside the school building. These are features of the school's wider learning environment, rather than a nursery session timetable.
Settling into nursery was a strength in October 2024. Children became familiar with routines quickly, and relationships connecting parents, staff and children were exceptionally positive. That matters for a first school experience: learning the daily expectations and building trust with adults go together. A nursery parent's feedback also described a settled child who enjoyed attending and could explain classroom routines.
SEND support uses a graduated approach, and the school provides a SEND information report alongside links to North Tyneside's local offer and SENDIASS. These give families routes into understanding support and seeking advice.
SEND provision. The October 2024 findings also raised a school-wide concern: provision did not precisely fit the needs of some pupils with SEND, leaving those needs incompletely met. Ofsted asked the school to keep reviewing how it identifies SEND and the support it provides. Families considering the nursery should distinguish that wider concern from the positive early years findings and discuss how support will address their child's needs.
Safeguarding concerns can be taken to the team through the school office. Staff receive training throughout the year, and building access uses codes or fobs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through North Tyneside Council, using its online application route or a paper application from the local authority. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
