Conversation, independence and learning indoors and outside give May Bank's nursery its character. This is governor-run provision on the school site, catering for three-year-olds. Children join school life from their nursery start, rather than learning in a separate setting.
At the inspection on 6 and 7 December 2023, Ofsted judged early years provision Outstanding. That judgement covers the school's early years, rather than being a separate nursery rating. The nursery-specific findings give it substance: children settled promptly, adults supported their language development, and familiar routines helped them become more confident and independent.
Adult interaction is a central feature of learning here. In December 2023, learning was planned with ambition from the nursery stage, and staff demonstrated effective speaking and listening through their conversations with children. For a parent choosing an early learning setting, this puts everyday exchanges with adults alongside the learning activities themselves.
Both outdoor and indoor learning areas were thoughtfully arranged. Children enjoyed using these spaces, giving the nursery day more than one environment for learning. The evidence supports this emphasis on the learning spaces themselves, rather than a particular named teaching method.
Routine also matters. In December 2023, established patterns helped children develop confidence and do more for themselves. That makes independence part of the day, alongside adult guidance. The school's stated aims include making learning enjoyable and challenging, and developing children's confidence, respect for others and care for their surroundings.
Settling into nursery was a strength in December 2023: children became involved in school life and adjusted quickly. This matters for families facing their child's first experience of a school setting. Ambition for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities also began in early years, placing inclusion within the approach from the start.
The school values parents' knowledge of their children and aims to work with families when considering individual needs and support. This gives parent communication a clear purpose: sharing what helps a child learn and feel understood.
School-wide safeguarding was effective in December 2023. Minor administrative mistakes in recruitment checks were corrected during the inspection, and children had not been put at risk by them.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
