At a Glance

Counting, pattern-making and stories from around the world give Ponteland’s nursery a mix of early number work and discovery. This is the nursery within Ponteland Primary School, which occupies a purpose-built building in Ponteland. Children can be considered from the term after their third birthday.

The nursery has 39 places in total: two part-time cohorts of 26 children, alongside 13 places for eligible families using 30-hour childcare. Those cohorts attend different parts of the week. For parents, the choice is between a fixed two-and-a-half-day pattern and attendance across Monday to Friday, with nursery breakfast and after-school clubs extending the options.

The Nursery Day

Maths has a daily teaching session, with children working both as a class and in smaller groups. Planning draws on Birth to 5 Matters and Development Matters. Mathematical exploration also remains available through the activities children can choose, so number learning extends beyond the adult-led session.

In May 2023, Ofsted found that nursery children were being prepared well for later phonics teaching. Early-years number activities included making patterns and counting, with adults introducing words to compare height and size. These are concrete foundations: children practise noticing differences and describing them, alongside learning about number.

Geography begins close to home. Nursery learning includes the immediate surroundings and the school environment, then discussions about holidays and other places, with stories from around the world throughout. The early-years small world area lets children recreate familiar surroundings and places that matter to them. It gives an abstract subject a practical starting point.

Creative work also starts in early years. In art, children learn to respond to work, make changes and evaluate what they have made. The emphasis is on developing ideas as well as making something.

Care and Support

Recognising feelings is part of early-years learning through Zones of Regulation. The school aims to help children identify emotions and develop ways to manage them; children may use the emotion’s name directly rather than its colour zone. That allows different ways to talk about feelings.

For additional needs, the school follows Northumberland’s Graduated Approach, using a cycle of assessment, planning, action and review. Development is monitored from each child’s starting point. This gives support a process for revisiting needs rather than treating the first plan as final.

Safeguarding arrangements include regular staff training and checks on adults working with children. The school’s safeguarding team includes leadership and parent and behaviour support roles, giving families more than one point of contact for concerns.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Parents must make a separate application through Northumberland County Council; families outside the catchment apply through their own local authority. Applications are considered together and ranked against the admission criteria.

The application portal opens in November and closes in January. Follow the deadline for the relevant entry year: the dated closing date of 15 January 2026 belonged to the September 2026 intake and has passed. Early preparation for phonics is an educational benefit, separate from the allocation of places.

Practical Information

Part-time attendance runs either on Monday and Tuesday with Wednesday morning, or on Wednesday afternoon with Thursday and Friday. On Wednesdays, Caterpillar class finishes at 11:30am and Butterfly class starts at 12:30pm. Early-years sessions finish at 3:10pm, when the nursery collection gates open. The split Wednesday matters when planning childcare and work.

Eligible families can use the nursery’s Monday-to-Friday 30-hour places. Breakfast and after-school clubs also accept nursery children. For enquiries, contact the school office on 01661 822 103 or admin@ppschool.uk. Nursery applications use an online form, with a closing date of 12 February for a September start; late applications are considered after the main process.
