Songs, stories and a morning burst of exercise give Little Fistral Nursery a recognisable early-years character. This is the nursery at The Bishops CofE Learning Academy on Treninnick Hill in Newquay, within a Church of England primary school. Language is a clear focus: children’s communication is checked carefully, with support matched to the needs those checks uncover.
Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 4 and 5 February 2025. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Vocabulary grows through shared storytelling, singing and rhymes. In February 2025, adults used these activities to interest children in language and introduce new words. For a parent, the useful detail is the link between everyday activities and communication: stories and songs are part of learning, with language development receiving deliberate attention.
At 10.00am, nursery children have a brief movement break. Exercise punctuates the morning, giving children a change of pace alongside their learning. This is a concrete part of the nursery routine, rather than simply an ambition to keep children active.
The early years foundation stage includes attention to children’s communication and social development here. In February 2025, children experienced a sense of belonging from early years onwards, accepting differences between one another. Positive behaviour also began in early years. Those findings give families something useful to weigh alongside the language focus: learning to participate with other children matters too.
Communication needs receive targeted help. In February 2025, careful assessment led to support tailored to children needing additional help with speech and language. The significance is practical: an individual difficulty can shape the help a child receives, rather than being treated as a general language-development issue.
For concerns about a child’s happiness or progress, the school directs families first to the class teacher. An appointment with the special educational needs coordinator can also be arranged through the school secretary. That gives parents a route for raising concerns and taking a conversation further when needed.
Attending Little Fistral Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal school admissions process, meeting the applicable deadline.
Cornwall Council manages admissions to Kernow Learning schools, and applications go through its School Admissions service. Nursery enquiries follow a different route: the school office. Keep both processes in mind when planning the move to school; arranging nursery attendance does not complete the Reception application.
Contact the school office to apply to the nursery or arrange an informal visit. The telephone number is 01637 876317, and the email address is thebishops@kernowlearning.co.uk. A visit provides an opportunity to see the provision before choosing it.
The school’s collection arrangement is from the class door. Families should notify staff if someone different will collect their child or if they are delayed. This instruction matters when plans change: communicating the alteration helps staff understand the collection arrangements and avoids confusion for the child.
