Familiar stories, nursery rhymes and learning to play together give the early years at St. John the Baptist Catholic Primary School their clearest character. Children join the school's nursery from age three, beginning their education within a Catholic primary school on Beckbridge Lane in Normanton.
The school belongs to the Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust. The Trust aims to serve Catholic and non-Catholic families alike, placing value on each child's individuality. That is the wider ethos surrounding this school nursery.
Language and shared play are concrete features of the early years experience. In November 2023, children were learning familiar stories and rhymes, taking part readily in activities and playing successfully with one another. For a young child, these are connected experiences: learning words happens alongside learning how to join in with other children.
Staff received continuing training and support to help turn activities into opportunities for new learning and vocabulary. The emphasis was on what children gained from an activity, giving parents something more useful to consider than simply whether children were kept busy. Routines and expectations also began in the early years, helping establish the pattern of school life from the start.
The early years curriculum was strong overall at that point, but its sequence needed greater clarity in places. Some aspects did not make the essential knowledge sufficiently explicit, limiting how precisely staff could teach it and check what children remembered. Work to refine this was already underway in November 2023. The distinction matters: children's engagement was positive, while the planning behind some learning still required attention.
Playing cooperatively was a positive early years finding in November 2023. Alongside established routines, that gives a practical picture of children learning to participate in a group, with social learning forming part of their everyday experience.
Safeguarding responsibilities extend across the Trust's academies. Each academy has a Designated Safeguarding Lead, providing a school-level role for child protection concerns. Staff receive safeguarding awareness training and have procedures to follow when worried about a child.
CPOMs is used across the Trust to monitor child protection. Parents with concerns about a child's welfare should contact the relevant school's safeguarding officer. This gives families a direct route for raising concerns, alongside the staff's responsibility to act on them.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing the nursery and securing a school place as separate decisions.
