Nursery at Downe Manor Primary School

Play and speech support give Downe Manor’s nursery its character. Alongside the main nursery, an ICAN unit reserves 10 places for children with speech and language needs, with its own admission criteria. For families considering specialist provision, that distinction matters: these places sit outside the main nursery’s capacity of 42.
The provision serves three and four-year-olds at Downe Manor Primary School in Northolt. The November 2025 nursery policy normally allows entry in the term following a child’s third birthday, with exceptions possible. September is the intended intake, with January or April entry possible when spaces remain. At the June 2024 Ofsted inspection, early years provision received a Good judgement within the school’s inspection.
Children have time to choose their own play as well as join activities organised by adults. Staff support learning through conversation and interaction, while outdoor exploration runs through the day. This gives children opportunities to follow an interest and practise learning with adult help.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework shapes the curriculum, alongside Development Matters guidance. Its learning areas bring together movement, communication and emotional development with early number work, literacy, creative expression and understanding the world. The emphasis is broader than preparation for reading alone.
Technical toys and construction resources introduce early computing through practical exploration. For children attending full time, the day includes a lunch break between morning and afternoon sessions, scheduled from 11:45am to 12:15pm. June 2024 early-years findings described children understanding new ideas and building foundational knowledge, giving a dated indication of how this approach translated into learning.
In June 2024, children in early years adapted readily to routines and learned successfully alongside one another. That supports the picture of a nursery where joining the group and becoming familiar with the day are part of learning.
Speech and language provision is a distinctive part of the offer. Full-time attendance in the ICAN unit can be delayed pending consultation between its teacher and the main nursery teacher, allowing that decision to take account of the child’s circumstances. The school’s SENCo holds the Government SENCo qualification. Its SEND policy provides for termly progress discussions with parents, giving families a regular opportunity to review support.
For children with SEND who need help with intimate care, an individual plan is agreed with parents or carers. Full-time nursery children can bring a packed lunch that follows the school’s packed-lunch policy or have a charged school meal. Lunch supervision also carries a charge, separate from funded childcare hours.
Attending Downe Manor’s nursery does not guarantee admission to its Reception class. Families must make a separate Reception application through eAdmissions; Ealing Local Authority manages Reception admissions under the admission policy. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
For children with SEND, the school’s transition arrangements include sharing information with the next class teacher and involving both teachers in the final SEND meeting of the year. This supports continuity of care and learning; it does not secure a school place.
Morning nursery runs from 8:45am to 11:45am. The admissions page marks afternoon nursery as currently unavailable and lists full-time nursery from 8:45am to 3:15pm. Full-time provision depends on sufficient demand. Places operate Monday to Friday during term time, and a full-time place requires attendance across the allocated sessions rather than a part-week pattern.
Part-time provision covers 15 funded hours; eligible full-time provision covers 30. Full-time places have additional charges for time beyond those funded hours, and paid full-time attendance is also possible for families who do not qualify for the extended funding. Ask the school for current charges. Eligible parents must obtain their funding code and email it to admissions@downemanor.org.uk.
Nursery uniform includes a compulsory turquoise logo sweatshirt or cardigan, a white shirt or polo and grey trousers, skirt or pinafore. Request a nursery application form from the school office. Enquiries can go to admissions@downemanor.org.uk or 020 8845 1155.
