Daily rhymes, stories and the small social lessons of snack time give Starfish Preschool its character. Bacton Primary School's nursery serves children aged two to four at the school on Walcott Road in Bacton. It is part of a school setting within AIM Federation, with a Starfish manager and preschool assistants forming the nursery team.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good at the inspection on 16 and 17 July 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
Language learning has a clear daily rhythm. In July 2024, preschool children sang rhymes and heard stories each day, building vocabulary they could bring into their own conversations. The practical benefit is straightforward: listening and singing give children words to use when they want to explain something or join a conversation.
Snack time carries learning too. Children became familiar with its routines quickly, practising sharing, waiting and taking turns. These are everyday foundations for participating in a group, rather than learning confined to an adult-led activity.
Alongside those early years experiences, Bacton uses The Joy of Not Knowing, or JONK, as its school philosophy. The school aims to help children approach unfamiliar learning with curiosity and to see difficulty as part of learning. It also values reflection and resourcefulness. For parents, this describes the attitude the school wants children to develop when an answer does not come immediately.
Behaviour expectations explicitly take preschool children's stage of development into account. Positive behaviour is reinforced through rewards such as certificates and stickers, while fairness and respect are shared expectations. The implication for younger children is that behaviour is approached with their age and development in mind.
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), AIM Federation's team works with families, teaching staff and external specialists on personalised learning plans. Support can be universal, targeted or specialised, allowing the approach to respond to different needs. Parents have a role in that planning. SEND enquiries at Bacton go directly to the school.
Separate application. Attending Starfish Preschool does not guarantee a Reception place at Bacton. Nursery applications go to the school office, while Reception applications go directly to Norfolk County Council. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions route and meet its deadline. Treat choosing a nursery place and applying for Reception as two distinct decisions.
The school office handles applications to Starfish Preschool directly. Contact Bacton on 01692 650240 or email office-bacton@aimfederation.org. The address is Walcott Road, Bacton, Norwich, NR12 0EY. These give families a direct point of contact for their preschool application and for communicating with the school.
