Bumblebees for two-year-olds, Ladybirds for three- and four-year-olds: Bignold’s youngest children have two distinct rooms, with play and conversation shaping their learning. This is the nursery and pre-school provision within Bignold Primary School and Nursery on Wessex Street in Norwich. Each room has a lead, supported by nursery and pre-school staff.
The practical distinction matters. Two-year-olds attend in the morning, while pre-school operates across a longer day. Both rooms run during term time. Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at the inspection on 25 and 26 May 2022; this is an early years judgement within the school inspection.
Play gives children a starting point for exploration, with learning areas arranged to encourage discovery. Within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), Bignold plans experiences around children’s existing knowledge and skills, then supports those who need help to take part. For parents, the emphasis is on building learning through activities and interaction.
Conversation is a substantial part of that work. Adults comment on children’s play, ask questions and introduce vocabulary through songs, rhymes and stories. In May 2022, inspectors found that nursery and pre-school children gained vocabulary through conversations with adults, developed social skills quickly and received skilled teaching and attentive care. The reading groundwork includes listening to poems, songs and stories, giving children language to draw on before formal reading instruction.
Number learning also starts with talk. Nursery children explore basic number ideas and mathematical vocabulary through communication and interaction. White Rose Maths supports the school’s planning and teaching sequences. Pencil grip and forming numbers are further early skills practised in nursery, linking the physical business of making marks with the language of learning.
Snacks are included: options include milk, fruit, rice cakes and breadsticks. For children staying for lunch, families can choose a meal from The Pantry or provide a healthy packed lunch. That gives parents a choice between catering and food from home.
Bignold aims to work with parents around each child’s individual needs. Its school-wide SEND approach begins with the Universal Offer, providing classroom support before additional interventions are considered. Where further help is needed, teachers develop a SEND support plan with the SENCo, the child and their family. Parents with concerns about development or learning should speak first to their child’s teacher.
The Bignold Family Hub brings together pastoral support, advice and signposting. A Family Support Worker can help with worries, local services and foodbank support. Interpreters can also support family conversations in person, online or by telephone, making discussion accessible to parents who need another language.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through Norfolk School Admissions, using the normal application route and deadline. Nursery and pre-school enquiries go directly to Bignold, so families need to treat the two applications as separate tasks.
Morning sessions run from 8.30am to 11.30am, Monday to Friday, for nursery and pre-school. Pre-school operates until 3.30pm, with its afternoon session running from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Parents use the designated entrance for each room.
Universal funded places cover 15 hours, and working-parent funded places cover 30 hours; additional hours can be paid for. Contact the school for current charges. The Bridge provides nursery after-school care from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, including a snack, with bookings through Arbor.
