Outdoor play in all weathers gives Bluebell’s nursery a clear character. Children learn through play in a classroom and outdoor space, with room for up to 26 children aged three and four. The nursery belongs to Bluebell Primary School on Lovelace Road in Norwich, so this is an early years start within a primary school.
Kindness shapes the school’s aims, alongside curiosity and growing independence. For nursery children, that means a curriculum intended to develop both learning and relationships, rather than treating preparation for school as academic practice alone.
The morning runs from 08:40 to 11:40 on weekdays in term time. Play is the main route into learning, and activities take place inside and outdoors whatever the weather. That gives children opportunities to explore beyond the classroom during their session.
The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Here, that means activities and experiences supporting children’s development and preparing them for school. Bluebell plans its curriculum from nursery onwards, with later learning building on earlier knowledge. The school also aims to encourage children to ask questions, become curious and develop independence.
In January 2025, Ofsted found that nursery and Reception children began their education successfully, with engaging opportunities to explore inside and outdoors. Adults used questions about children’s activities to develop their speech and language. They also monitored early learning and gave extra help where needed. For parents, the useful detail is the combination of exploration, adult conversation and checks on how learning is progressing.
Settling is approached through partnership with parents. The nursery works with families to help children feel comfortable and to respond to individual needs, recognising that development differs from child to child.
Across Bluebell, the SEND process starts with concerns raised by parents, discussion with teaching staff and assessment. Classroom adjustments and interventions can follow, with support reviewed regularly when a need is identified. Parents can arrange a discussion with the SEND coordinator through the office. This gives families a route for raising concerns about their child’s learning.
Arbor handles messages between families, teachers and the office, as well as personal information and consent. Class Dojo shares learning through pictures, video and messages, with translation into 30+ languages. A Parent Support Advisor can also help with difficulties at home affecting school life and make referrals to other support services.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application for Reception through Norfolk County Council. Treat that application as a distinct step when planning your child’s next year, rather than assuming a nursery place carries forward.
Morning timetable. The nursery’s term-time session finishes at 11:40. Families need collection arrangements that fit this morning pattern.
