Play gives learning its shape at Clover Hill: new words, number ideas and growing independence are practised through activities children can join in with. The nursery forms the Foundation Stage 1 provision at Clover Hill VA Infant and Nursery School on Rawley Road in Bowthorpe, Norwich. It belongs within the school’s early years provision, with an Early Years Lead, a nursery teacher and early years teaching assistants.
The school describes its inclusion work as rooted in its Christian ethos. For families, that gives context to its emphasis on recognising different backgrounds and helping children understand one another.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) structures the learning. In parent terms, this brings together talking and listening, physical development and relationships with early literacy, mathematics, creativity and understanding the world. Play is the means of practising these skills, while adults respond to children’s interests and developmental needs.
Language has a practical purpose here. Adults model communication and give children opportunities to practise new words in different situations. Music and role play also give children ways to explore ideas imaginatively. Talking becomes part of play.
Read, Write Inc. supports early reading, while mathematics uses Numicon and White Rose Hub. Books, rhymes, drawing and developing control of writing sit alongside exploring number, patterns, shapes and measurement. Adults encourage children to explain what they notice and try ideas even when they might make a mistake.
Outdoor activities are offered daily. Running, balancing, jumping and climbing provide practice in movement and coordination, using apparatus of different sizes. Creative opportunities include painting, making music and small-world play, so children can express ideas through materials, sound and imagination as well as speech.
Learning to share, take turns and manage feelings is part of the curriculum. Adults model how to care for the body, including healthy eating, and support children towards handling personal needs independently. These are practical steps towards managing more of their own day.
Tapestry connects home and school through learning activities and communication with parents. Families can contribute photographs or stories of experiences outside school, giving staff another way to connect classroom learning with a child’s life at home.
For additional support, the school’s pastoral team works with families on emotional, social and health barriers to learning. Its links include Just One Norfolk and Flourish. Designated safeguarding leads wear orange lanyards, making the adults responsible for safeguarding recognisable to parents.
Nursery attendance confers Reception admissions priority: children attending Clover Hill Nursery are included among the oversubscription criteria. That does not guarantee a place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process by the applicable deadline; nursery enrolment does not replace that application.
Admissions priority. Nursery attendance is one criterion among several. Families should treat it as a consideration in allocation, rather than certainty about their child’s next school place.
Extra nursery sessions are among the school’s charged services, which operate on a not-for-profit basis. Contact the school for current charges.
Nursery enquiries go through the school office on 01603 745559 or CHoffice@allangelsfederation.org.uk. School visits can be arranged by appointment, giving families an opportunity to discuss choosing the nursery.
