Hedgehogs and Squirrels give Woodside’s nursery its own identity within Hethersett Woodside Primary & Nursery School on Coachmaker Way. Both nursery groups have teaching and support staff, placing the provision within the school’s wider team while retaining named groups for its youngest learners.
At the inspection on 24 and 25 January 2024, Ofsted judged early years provision Good. That judgement covered the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. The early years strengths were concrete: planned learning, adult interaction that developed communication, and an outdoor area that extended learning opportunities.
Conversation matters here. In January 2024, exchanges between children and adults helped children develop their language and communication. The curriculum addressed the different areas of early learning, giving children preparation for the next stage rather than concentrating on a narrow set of skills.
The Early Years Foundation Stage, or EYFS, brings learning, development and care together for children up to five. At Woodside, the January 2024 findings described careful curriculum planning across the different areas of early learning. An outdoor area, newly developed at that time, added another setting for learning. Its value lay in extending the curriculum beyond indoor activity.
Art begins with colour and shape in early years. Access Art provides the school’s curriculum basis, giving these first explorations a place within its broader art teaching. Books also have a named place in early years: the Reading Marathon selection includes Ruby’s Worry, You Choose and Tidy. For parents, those titles offer specific starting points for sharing the school’s early years reading interests at home.
Teaching staff and nursery teaching assistants work with Hedgehogs and Squirrels. Beyond those groups, the school has a special educational needs coordinator and an inclusion lead. These roles give families identifiable responsibilities within the team when discussing additional needs.
Emotional support includes Twiggle, a small turtle used to help children pause and explain their feelings. For younger children struggling with routines, pictures can accompany the school’s now-and-next language. The school uses this approach to make expectations clearer and reduce anxiety about what follows.
For children learning English as an additional language, school support includes visual resources, translated materials and interventions. An EAL lead monitors English acquisition, with advice from the Local Authority EAL Advisor. These are school-wide arrangements; families can discuss how they apply to their nursery child.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process and meet the applicable deadline. The school’s admissions route includes an online application at www.norfolk.gov.uk.
Preparation for further learning is a separate question from securing admission. In January 2024, the early years curriculum prepared children for their next learning stage. That educational preparation should not be treated as an admissions advantage.
