Child-led play and teacher-guided sessions shape Nelson’s nursery, with space for exploration indoors and outside. This is the nursery within Nelson Infant School on Northumberland Street in Norwich, serving children aged three and four. Children can start from their third birthday.
Capacity is up to 30 children in each session, subject to sufficient staffing. Families can choose mornings, afternoons or full days, giving them different ways to fit nursery around the week. The provision runs during term time, so holiday childcare needs a separate plan.
A qualified teacher guides nursery sessions, with teaching assistants supporting the children. The approach is child-led: play, exploration and conversations with adults provide the starting points for learning. Nelson aims to encourage children to try challenges and communicate their thoughts and feelings, making confidence and expression part of its educational purpose.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for the provision. Here, the emphasis is on children exploring their interests alongside adults, rather than a description of formal subject lessons. Indoor and outdoor nursery spaces give that exploration two settings. Nelson describes both as spacious and designed to encourage imagination.
A morning or afternoon lasts three hours. Full-day children stay across both sessions, with a supported lunch break between them. That offers families a longer nursery day while preserving time for eating and adult support.
Regular attendance is part of Nelson’s approach to settling. The nursery says a consistent pattern across the week helps children settle and gives staff time to get to know them and their families. Its team also works with families to develop relationships, while consultation includes everyday contact and questionnaires.
Children attending all day bring a packed lunch. Their half-hour lunch session is supported and carries no charge; families therefore provide the food while the nursery supplies support during the break.
Across Nelson Infant School, staff adjust communication, classroom spaces and planning to learners’ needs. School support includes links with Norfolk Speech and Language Service and EPSS, with Provision Mapper used to keep reviews and learning plans updated. For families considering additional support, the school’s SEND coordinator can be contacted at senco@nelsoninfant.org.uk.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and does not confer priority in the school’s oversubscription criteria. Families must make a separate application using their home local authority’s application form in the normal admissions round. The local authority sends the offer directly, so joining nursery should not be treated as securing the next stage.
Transition support is a separate matter. Nursery children become familiar with Nelson’s staff, routines and surroundings. The nursery aims to use that familiarity to support confidence and independence as children move on.
Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. Full-day attendance is 8:45am to 3:15pm. The minimum requested pattern is two and a half days each week, or mornings throughout the week, or afternoons throughout the week, for both funded and fee-paying children.
Early education runs for 38 weeks, with closures for bank holidays and five school INSET days. Funding is usable between 8:45am and 3:15pm. The nursery accepts eligible government funding, including 15-hour places and potentially 30 hours for eligible working families. Extra sessions beyond funded hours can be purchased; contact the school for current charges.
