Nursery at Norwich School

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Weekly swimming, sport and lunch are part of the package at Norwich School’s Pre-Reception nursery. For families choosing a first school experience, those inclusions give the provision a distinct practical character: physical activity and meals sit alongside early learning, rather than being separate arrangements to organise.

Children are aged three on entry. The nursery belongs to Norwich Lower School, within the independent Norwich School at The Close. Its introduction was the subject of an April 2025 material-change inspection, which recommended approval of the proposed extension to admit three-year-olds. That was an assessment of the planned change, rather than a nursery grade.

The Nursery Day

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) provides the framework for the nursery’s curriculum plans. In parent language, the learning combines early literacy and numeracy with physical development, emotional development and discovering the world. The April 2025 plans covered children aged three to four from September 2025, bringing these areas together rather than treating preparation for school as reading and counting alone.

Observation was central to the planned assessment approach. Teachers would track what children could do and use that information to shape their next learning steps. The practical implication is an approach intended to respond to each child’s development. A programme of additional early-years activities was also planned to complement that learning.

Swimming and sport each take place weekly and are included in nursery fees, alongside clubs and trips. These give families concrete activities to weigh when considering the nursery day, with movement forming a recurring part of the experience.

Care and Support

Lunch and healthy snacks are included in the nursery package. This brings daytime food into the same arrangement as education and care, reducing the number of separate provisions families need to organise. Breakfast Club provides fruit, toast and cereal for children attending before the included care begins.

For children with additional learning needs, families are encouraged to disclose those needs early in the admissions process so that adjustments can be considered. Admission remains conditional on meeting the school’s criteria. SEND enquiries can go directly to the school’s SEND coordinator at sen@norwich-school.org.uk, giving parents a specific contact for that discussion.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Reception applicants use the school’s online registration route. Families should confirm with the school how that process applies to children already attending the nursery.

Reception applicants are assessed for readiness to learn through group and individual activities. These consider sociability, curiosity, problem-solving, articulation and independent thought. The distinction matters: choosing the nursery day and obtaining a Reception place are separate decisions.

Practical Information

Included wraparound care runs from 08:00 to 17:00. For Pre-Reception children, After School Club covers 16:00 to 17:00 within that arrangement. Breakfast Club runs from 07:30 to 08:00, Monday to Friday, with no advance booking required; it carries an additional charge. Extended Day care from 17:00 to 18:00 is also charged separately. Contact the school for current charges.

Funding eligibility. Government funding for 15 hours can be used to reduce Pre-Reception fees, subject to eligibility and funding conditions. Children may qualify from the term after their third birthday. Families should therefore distinguish a reduction against fees from the overall nursery package.

Admissions enquiries go to admissions@norwich-school.org.uk. Individual tours during a working school day are available, offering a way to explore the setting before applying. New families receive a uniform list and supplier information before joining; Friends of Norwich School also runs a second-hand uniform shop on selected dates.
