In July 2023, pedal toys, gardening and stories shaped nursery learning: physical activity sat alongside imaginative play and early language. Stalham Infant School and Nursery provides nursery education from two years old at its school in Stalham Green. It is part of the infant school, with learning shaped around young children’s development.
In July 2023, Ofsted found that nursery staff understood children’s developmental needs and supported both physical and social learning. That gives families a useful picture of the provision: care, play and learning work together, rather than appearing as separate parts of the day.
Children have opportunities to choose activities independently and to take part with an adult’s help. In July 2023, nursery adults delivered learning suited to children’s stage of development. This combination gives children room to explore for themselves while receiving guidance when they need it. Independence has a place here.
The early years physical environment supported active learning. Gardening and pedal toys were concrete examples, giving children opportunities to develop movement skills through play. Imagination and curiosity were encouraged too, so the learning extended beyond physical activity. Playing alongside other children also created opportunities to practise social skills.
Stories and sound practice formed part of nursery learning in July 2023. Children enjoyed listening to books, putting spoken language and shared reading into their experience before formal phonics teaching. For parents, these are useful distinctions: nursery reading activity involved listening and exploring sounds, with adults supporting development through activities children enjoyed.
In July 2023, nursery children were happy and received attentive care. Adults understood how to help them develop socially as well as physically. The opportunity to play independently or with guidance matters here: support could sit alongside children’s own choices, rather than replacing them.
Consistency of teaching. The July 2023 findings also raised a school-wide concern about adults’ teaching methods and training, with some pupils progressing more slowly, including a small number finding reading difficult. This was not identified specifically as a nursery weakness; the nursery findings were positive. Families should keep the distinction between those two findings clear when assessing the provision.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a place in the school’s Reception. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions route and meet the applicable deadline. Treat choosing a nursery place and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.
In July 2023, nursery children were ready for the move to Reception. Their preparation included social and physical development, stories and practising sounds. That is educational preparation for the next stage, rather than an admissions entitlement.
