A shared early years class gives Sutton's nursery its defining shape: children aged from 3 learn alongside Reception children. This is nursery provision within Sutton Church of England Infant Academy, part of the Swallowtail Federation, rather than a separate childcare setting. For families, the mixed class means the nursery day already takes place within a school community.
The federation describes friendship, trust and kindness as its guiding values. Sutton shares that Church of England context with its federation partners.
Morning, afternoon and combined full-day sessions give families a choice of how much of the early years day their child attends. At Sutton, the morning runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; combining the two sessions takes the day through to 2.45pm. The class brings preschool and Reception ages together, so the nursery experience is organised around a shared early years group.
Outdoor learning is part of the federation's approach. Its schools have extensive grounds, with regular opportunities to learn outside, and regular Forest School sessions are offered to all pupils. Forest School emphasises how children learn rather than simply the content they cover. That gives the outdoor element a distinct purpose: attention to the learning process itself, alongside time in the federation's large rural school grounds.
Breakfast club is open to preschool children from 8.00am, with a choice of attending with breakfast or without it. Families can therefore include breakfast in the start of their child's booked day. This attendance can use funding entitlement or be paid for.
A federation SENCO provides a contact for special educational needs enquiries through senco@swallowtail.stbenets.org. Families can also make contact through any academy's address or telephone number, giving Sutton parents a route to that role through their own school office.
Attending Sutton's nursery does not guarantee a place in its Reception class. Families must apply separately for Reception through the normal admissions route and meet the normal deadline. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
The shared early years class is a day-to-day arrangement, not an admissions entitlement. Learning alongside Reception children should not be mistaken for a promise of a future place. Keep the Reception application in your plans even while your child is attending nursery.
Sessions run Monday to Friday. Families can choose a morning or afternoon, or combine both into a full day from 8.45am to 2.45pm. A further extension takes preschool attendance to 3.20pm; this can be covered by funding entitlement or paid for. After-school wraparound operates term time only. Mini wraparound continues until 4.30pm, while the full wraparound option ends at 6.00pm. These later finish options matter when matching childcare to working hours.
Entry operates through a waiting list. Families are contacted in the half-term before their child is due to start, with the availability they can be offered. That timing makes the offered sessions an important part of planning the family's routine.
