At a Glance

Two learning sessions, with care before and after them, give Seedlings a nursery day that can fit around family working hours. This is Alderman Pounder Infant and Nursery School’s own provision on Eskdale Drive, Chilwell. Nursery places are offered for children aged 3–4, with starts across the year when spaces become available.

Teaching is led by an early years teacher. The nursery aims to build independence and confidence through play that draws on children’s experiences outside school. That gives the provision a clear emphasis: learning to make choices, communicate and spend time with other children.

The Nursery Day

The morning learning session runs from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Lunch sits between them. Breakfast Club and After School Club extend the day at either end, so learning sessions and additional care have distinct places in the timetable.

Play combines individual activity with opportunities to join others. Children practise asking questions, explaining ideas and listening to responses, while adults help them decide when to collaborate and when to focus on something independently. The intended benefit is practical as well as educational: becoming more comfortable communicating with adults and peers.

In January 2023, Ofsted found that early years children formed secure relationships and made productive use of their surroundings for play. Younger children were learning routines, sharing turns and following adult guidance. Nursery reading began with songs, stories and rhymes, giving children ways to enjoy language before formal reading develops.

Language development also needed continued attention in the early years in January 2023. This matters alongside the emphasis on conversation and stories: enjoyment of language needs to be matched by a secure understanding of words.

Care and Support

A child’s key worker is the contact for a longer conversation about concerns or information the family wants to share. Seedlings encourages parents to raise these matters and aims to work in partnership with them. This gives families a specific person to approach when a brief exchange needs more time.

For children with SEND, joining arrangements may include contact with their previous early years setting and professionals already involved; a home visit may be recommended where appropriate. Support plans are developed with families at termly meetings, with targets and progress reviewed together.

The school can offer Attention Autism, speech and language support, and communication boards, depending on children’s needs. A sensory room and sensory resources are school facilities. These provide possible support beyond the nursery’s everyday activities, rather than a single approach for every child.

Lunch occupies the 11.45am to 12.30pm slot. Food is excluded from the lunch-session charge when that session is outside funded hours, so families need to distinguish the care session from the meal itself.

Moving On to Reception

Attending Seedlings does not guarantee a Reception place. Children attending Seedlings at the time of application receive priority under criterion 3 if they live in catchment at the application closing date, or criterion 6 if they live outside catchment. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority in the normal admissions round, with the primary application deadline of 15 January. Treat this as a separate step from nursery registration.

For children with SEND, transition support may include a meeting with parents and the current and new teachers, help from a teaching assistant on transition days, or a booklet to use at home and school. These arrangements support familiarity and preparation; they do not secure admission.

Practical Information

Seedlings operates Monday to Friday in term time, from 7.30am to 6.00pm. Breakfast Club finishes at 8.45am, and After School Club begins at 3.30pm. This gives families additional care alongside either learning session.

Funded nursery attendance of 15 hours per week starts in the term after a child turns 3; earlier funding depends on qualifying for a Letter of Eligibility. Working parents of children aged 3 or 4 may qualify for 30 hours. Sessions outside funded hours are charged, and late collection can also incur a charge. Contact the school for current charges.

Nursery registration uses a form with family details and space to explain medical conditions or special educational needs, helping staff prepare for the child’s transition. Enquiries go through the office on 0115 925 2928 or office@aldermanpounder.notts.sch.uk.
