Bear caves built from construction materials, torch experiments and banana milkshakes give this nursery's wider early years setting a practical, story-led character. Nursery provision belongs to Blessed Robert Widmerpool Catholic Primary and Nursery School on Listowel Crescent in Clifton, Nottingham. Catholic life is part of the experience: early years children join prayer, singing and reflection with older children.
Ofsted rated the school's early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 22 and 23 March 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separate nursery inspection.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning with opportunities to communicate, create and investigate. Here, concrete early years activities show what that can mean for a child. In a We're Going on a Bear Hunt activity, children retold the story with movements and sounds, then made bear faces from conkers, pinecones, wood and stones. Small construction pieces became bear caves, with children building alone and together. A familiar story supplied the starting point for language, making and cooperation.
Torch investigations brought another kind of conversation. Children predicted what might happen, described their observations and explained their ideas, using words including transparent, shadow and bright. Making Fairtrade banana milkshakes connected food preparation with discussion about banana farms and the people who grow food. These are examples of learning through something children can handle and explore.
Indoor surroundings received wooden furniture, new paint and neutral blinds in a Foundation Stage refurbishment in September 2022. Outdoors, early years children have made shared drawings to calm music and arranged pictures using natural materials and small world toys. The playground also hosted their Big Lent Walk in 2025, when they collectively completed 24 laps for CAFOD. Outdoor activity connects movement with creative work and, in that example, charity.
Emotional learning starts early. In March 2022, children in early years were learning ways to calm themselves. Teddy Bears' Hospital activities have also introduced hospital visits, looking after teeth, exercise and feelings through conversations with visiting doctors. Familiar toys give children a concrete way to explore unfamiliar experiences.
The school's SEND support includes personalised help recorded in an Individual Provision Map (IPM), with regular reviews and possible advice from professionals such as a speech and language therapist. Parents can contact the special educational needs coordinator through the school office. This provides a route for discussing a child's needs and coordinating support.
Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal local authority admissions route by the normal deadline. Treat choosing nursery and applying for school as two decisions.
Shared early years celebrations with older children bring contact with the wider school community. Those experiences are separate from the allocation of Reception places.
The school is on Listowel Crescent, Clifton, Nottingham, NG11 9BH. Enquiries can go to admin@brw.nottingham.sch.uk or 0115 915 2392. This is also the office contact route for SEND discussions.
School uniform is supplied by just-schoolwear. Keep that school-wide arrangement distinct from any nursery clothing requirements.
