Nursery at Butler's Hill Infant and Nursery School

At a Glance

Conversation gives this nursery its character. In March 2023, Ofsted found that adults helped children extend their vocabulary through everyday exchanges and that the nursery gave children a secure beginning to learning. That makes talking with adults a meaningful part of the day, rather than simply a way to organise activities.

Foundation 1 is the nursery provision at Butler's Hill Infant and Nursery School, on Broomhill Road in Hucknall. Its approach combines children's interests with activities directed by adults. For families, the appeal is a school nursery where early learning has room to follow a child's curiosity.

The Nursery Day

Play and direct teaching work together within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In parent terms, children learn through exploration while adults introduce skills and knowledge. The nursery adjusts its planning around the interests and needs of the children attending, alongside the learning that requires adult guidance. This gives children's discoveries a role in shaping what happens next.

The school aims to help children persevere through its Growth Mindset approach, with practical experiences and opportunities to develop relationships. Early language is a concrete focus: conversation with staff helps children practise expressing themselves and learn new words.

Stories offer another starting point. Nursery story activities include We're going on a Bear Hunt, Whatever Next and The Snowy Day, giving families specific books to share alongside nursery learning. Colour, shape, letter and number activities provide further points of focus.

Across early years, technology includes Beebots, remote control cars and torches, with adults demonstrating careful use. These give children equipment to investigate as well as opportunities to practise handling it. GetSet4PE is used from early years onwards; its movement work includes coordination, balance and agility. Physical development therefore has a planned place alongside language and exploration.

Care and Support

Keyworkers form part of the nursery team, and the nursery teacher is also the keyworker for Blue group. This gives that group an identified adult within the teaching structure. Parents can speak with nursery staff at either end of the day, send a message through Dojo or telephone the school office, offering several ways to share questions and concerns.

Speech and language support resources cover listening, vocabulary, conversation and building sentences. These provide practical areas of focus for families supporting communication. For safeguarding concerns, parents can contact the school's designated safeguarding team through staff or the office.

Breakfast club adds a food option for children attending before nursery: cereal, toast, juice and beans on toast are on the menu. The club uses the school hall, so this additional care takes place on the school site.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through Nottinghamshire County Council when their child reaches full-time school age. Treat choosing nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

The March 2023 inspection found that the move from nursery into Reception worked smoothly. That is useful reassurance about transition, but it does not change the need to apply separately.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 8.40am to 11.40am; the afternoon session runs from 12.20pm to 3.20pm. The nursery offers standard 15-hour funded places and 30-hour funded places for eligible children. Families should contact the school for current charges.

Nursery children can use the school-run breakfast club and the after-school club operated by The Lime Trees. Breakfast club opens at 7.30am and finishes at 8.45am, with drop-off between 7.30am and 8am at the hall doors. Email breakfast@butlershill.notts.sch.uk to request a place; confirmation follows by email. After-school care requires registration before online booking.

The school favours red, white and grey clothing. Logo items come from Hucknall Sports, while second-hand uniform can be collected from the office, depending on sizes and availability. General nursery enquiries go to office@butlershill.notts.sch.uk or 0115 952 5904. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4pm.
