Sounds, rhyme and conversation give Fernwood’s nursery its clearest character: this is the beginning of the school’s reading curriculum, with language woven into early learning. Nursery is known as Foundation 1 within Fernwood Primary School in Wollaton, Nottingham. For parents, the emphasis is on children building the foundations for learning, rather than on the wider school’s results.
Early reading starts with exploring sounds and rhyme in the Nursery Year. That gives children a starting point for understanding how spoken language works before more formal reading instruction. Conversation matters too. In February 2025, early-years staff used carefully judged conversations to extend children’s vocabulary and communication, making adult interaction part of the learning itself.
Mathematics also has substance. Children developed detailed mathematical understanding, while purposeful activities drew them into learning. The early-years curriculum encouraged confidence and curiosity: children were supported to investigate and take an active part, rather than simply receive information.
Fernwood aims to develop creativity, questioning and connections between ideas from the earliest years. Its wider curriculum also gives attention to relationships, resilience and understanding different cultures. These aims help explain the intended balance between acquiring knowledge and learning how to relate to other people. For a parent choosing nursery, language, early mathematics and participation are the most concrete features of that approach.
In February 2025, the early-years provision combined an engaging curriculum with a caring ethos. Encouragement to become curious and confident sat alongside the work on communication, giving emotional support and learning a shared purpose.
Families receive a digital curriculum update each half-term. This gives parents a regular view of the learning their child is working towards and a starting point for conversations at home.
SEND enquiries can go to the deputy head responsible for the school’s SEND provision. That provides a direct route for discussing concerns about a child’s needs. Safeguarding concerns can be emailed to safeguarding@fernwoodprimary.co.uk; where a child faces immediate danger, the instruction is to contact emergency services.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must apply separately through the normal school admissions process. For children starting school, usually in September after their fourth birthday, the application route is Nottingham City school admissions at https://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/schooladmissions.
Treat that application as a separate family task, even when your child already attends Fernwood’s nursery. Familiarity with the school does not replace applying for a place.
The school is on Arleston Drive, Wollaton, Nottingham, NG8 2FZ. General enquiries go to the office team at admin@fernwoodprimary.co.uk or 0115 9155727. An online enquiry form also accepts questions, giving families a written contact option.
If a child is ill, parents should report the absence each day, giving the child’s name, class number and reason. Telephone reporting begins at 8am; email and the Arbor app provide other routes. Keeping that daily communication clear helps the school account for an absent child.
