At a Glance

A wild garden, a construction zone and daily stories give Haydn’s nursery its character: children have places to explore, make things and listen together. This is the school’s own nursery on Haydn Road in Sherwood, Nottingham. Entry is possible in September following a child’s third birthday, subject to places being available. There are 39 morning places and 26 afternoon places.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 10 and 11 December 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Children settled promptly, and their relationships with adults helped them engage with learning activities.

The Nursery Day

Five mornings or five afternoons form the usual weekly pattern, giving children a repeated routine rather than occasional sessions. Eligible families can also take a government-funded 30-hour place across five days, following the school day.

Haydn aims to combine children’s curiosity with the development of skills and knowledge through the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Haydn aims to build on experiences children bring from home and previous settings, and to use their interests when planning their next steps. For parents, the emphasis is on learning that starts with the child’s existing experience.

Inside, the Messy Play Area brings painting together with water, sand and playdoh. A large carpet provides space for learning as a group, while the reading corner offers somewhere to share stories. Small world play and the construction zone give children opportunities to imagine and build. Outdoors, the nursery playground and wild garden extend that exploration beyond the classroom.

Language has a specific daily routine. Nursery children follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised Foundations for Phonics, with oral blending, rhymes and stories developing spoken language and early reading skills. Favourite Five books are also shared from nursery onwards. These give book sharing a recognisable place alongside practical play.

Care and Support

Preparation for the 2024-2025 intake included introductory videos from the nursery team and photographs of the setting, so children could become familiar with adults and spaces before starting. An All about Me booklet was also planned for families preparing for the 2024-2025 intake. This made preparation something parents and children could do together at home.

Class Dojo carries nursery messages, learning photographs and regular updates, giving parents a way to follow what their child has been doing. For children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), the school invites parents to termly discussions about progress and their child’s provision map. Specialist partners include speech and language support, an educational psychologist and the autism team, including transition support. These discussions connect families with the planning of additional help.

Moving On to Reception

A separate application matters. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place and gives no priority in the Reception admissions criteria. Families must apply again through the Nottingham City Schools Admission Team. The application window runs between November and January in the academic year before the child starts school. Choosing nursery and applying for Reception are separate decisions.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8:45am to 11:45am; afternoons run from 12:15pm to 3:15pm. The 15-hour entitlement is taken as five mornings or five afternoons. Parents can request their preferred session, but allocation depends on maintaining the required staffing ratios, so the preference is not guaranteed.

For eligible families, the 30-hour funded pattern runs from 8:45am to 3:15pm across five days. Funding codes are required by August 31st for an autumn start, December 31st for spring and April 30th for summer. Nursery applications go directly through the School Office, which supplies application forms. General enquiries can be made on 0115 915 0193 or at admin@haydn.nottingham.sch.uk; prospective parents can arrange a visit through the office.

Assessment across the school. In December 2024, checks on learning were not sufficiently consistent across all curriculum subjects. The improvement action concerned the school as a whole, rather than identifying a nursery-specific weakness. It sits alongside the Outstanding early years judgement and should be understood in that wider context.

FAQs
