Stories, conversation and playful listening give Hempshill Hall’s nursery its character. This is the nursery provision within Hempshill Hall Primary School on Armstrong Road, Hempshill Vale Estate, Nottingham. Its early reading work starts with language and sounds, giving children something concrete to explore before formal reading begins.
At the inspection on 14 and 15 January 2025, Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Language provides a clear thread through the learning. Nursery children explore rhymes, hear stories and meet letter sounds through organised activities. In January 2025, adults demonstrated effective communication in their work with early years children. For a young child, this means learning includes hearing how adults express ideas, as well as having opportunities to speak.
Little Wandle provides the named approach to early reading, with Foundations for Phonics used in nursery. The emphasis is on preparing children through listening and talk. Rhyming, identifying a word’s opening sound and exploring its syllables are among the language activities described. These give parents a useful picture of the starting point: attention to what words sound like.
Conversation also runs through songs, play and storytelling. Adults introduce vocabulary and exchange ideas with children, so language practice is woven into activities rather than confined to a single lesson. Letter formation is taught in nursery alongside Little Wandle, adding a practical introduction to making letters.
The Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum is incorporated into topics planned for each half term. Planning is adjusted annually to reflect current events and children’s interests. That gives the learning a connection to subjects children are curious about, alongside the planned development of skills and knowledge.
Learning to manage feelings and share play is part of the early years experience. In January 2025, children were developing emotional regulation and learning to cooperate with one another. Warm relationships with adults began in early years. These findings matter for families weighing the social side of starting nursery, as well as the learning activities.
A safeguarding team provides a route for raising concerns. Parents and carers can contact safeguarding@hempshillhall.nottingham.sch.uk, and concerns are investigated with support offered where needed. Family support can also include a team around the family, coordinating help for emerging needs, including disability, housing difficulties and domestic abuse.
Reception requires a separate application. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Hempshill Hall. Families must apply again through the normal school admissions process.
Nottingham City Council handles school admissions and provides the formal application route. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions, even when your preference is to remain at the same school.
For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 0115 915 3275 or email admin@hempshillhall.nottingham.sch.uk. Office hours run from 8am to 4pm; these are office contact hours, rather than nursery session times. The address is Armstrong Road, Hempshill Vale Estate, Nottingham, NG6 7AT.
