At a Glance

Two large outdoor learning spaces, a sensory garden and live chickens give Hogarth Academy’s nursery a distinctive practical character. Learning centres on a storybook, with activities designed to encourage language, curiosity and independence. There is room for discovery alongside the group sessions.

This is the academy’s own nursery on Porchester Road in Nottingham, serving children aged 3 and 4. Entry starts in the term following a child’s third birthday. Funded places cover 15 or 30 hours, subject to eligibility. The nursery sits within the school’s early years provision, with joint activities involving foundation-year children.

The Nursery Day

A morning begins with registration at 8.30am, followed by stories, activities and personal, social and health education. Fruit, milk and water come at 10.30am; indoor and outdoor discovery follows at 10.45am before collection at 11.30am. The afternoon follows a similar pattern: registration at 12.15pm, group activities, a snack at 2.15pm and discovery time from 2.30pm until home time at 3.15pm. Children encounter maths and phonics daily.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) combines learning to communicate, move and manage relationships with early literacy, maths, creativity and understanding the world. Here, those areas shape both indoor and outdoor learning. Children explore independently as well as working in groups with an adult, so the session includes both their own choices and guided learning. The two outdoor spaces extend that exploration beyond the classroom.

Read Write Inc provides the daily phonics approach from nursery onwards. Creative work includes printing, drawing, painting, textiles, collage and three-dimensional making across early years. Weekly music uses Music Express and the Nottingham Music Hub, with singing, body percussion and instruments giving children different ways to participate.

In May 2024, early years children used precise vocabulary when discussing shapes and numbers, and developed their communication skills. Those are useful foundations for expressing ideas as well as understanding new learning.

Care and Support

Emotional learning starts early. In May 2024, children were explicitly taught to identify their feelings and manage them, with staff support when choices became difficult. This makes handling emotions part of learning, rather than leaving children to work it out alone.

The sensory garden supports children with sensory needs, while the nursery includes animal therapy with chickens on site. Snacks have a regular place in each session, with fruit, water and milk providing a pause between group activities and discovery time.

Where a support plan is needed, it is developed in discussion with parents and carers. Small-group or individual interventions can follow, and the SEND team oversees provision alongside teaching and support staff. Families can contact the SEND lead at SEND@hogarthacademy.co.uk. Concerns can also be raised confidentially through a form sent directly to the headteacher.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place at Hogarth Academy. Families must make a separate application through Nottingham City Council, either online or by telephone. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions.

Joint activities with foundation-year children support familiarity with the next stage. That transition practice helps children prepare for change; it does not replace the Reception application.

Practical Information

The nursery runs during term time, with morning sessions from 8.30am to 11.30am and afternoon sessions from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Applications are welcomed throughout the year. Registration involves joining a waiting list, with families contacted when a place becomes free.

To apply or arrange a tour, use the nursery enquiry form or call 0115 915 0106. Visits include meeting the nursery teaching team and seeing the facilities, with details confirmed by a team member. Email enquiries can go to admin@hogarthacademy.co.uk. For funded attendance, check eligibility for the 15-hour or 30-hour option before making arrangements.
