In November 2024, John Clifford’s nursery children enjoyed rhyming stories. Across the school, stories helped pupils of all ages build vocabulary. This is the nursery within John Clifford Primary School on Nether Street in Beeston, where the school’s age range begins at three.
Ofsted graded early years provision Good at the inspection on 5 and 6 November 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school; it is not a separate nursery rating.
Stories are a concrete feature of nursery learning. In November 2024, nursery children enjoyed rhyming books, while storytelling supported vocabulary across the school. For parents, this gives a useful picture of early language learning: books provide words to explore as well as stories to enjoy.
Purposeful learning. In November 2024, some early years activities did not connect clearly enough with what children were meant to learn, limiting their understanding and recall. The school also needed sharper checks on curriculum delivery to identify weaknesses. These concerns matter alongside the Good early years judgement: an activity needs to help children learn, rather than simply keep them occupied.
Support for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) begins with information about the child. Foundation Stage entry assessments, new starter meetings and information from Early Years Inclusion Support Service can help identify needs. Parents can raise concerns with the class teacher, with the SENCo or Assistant SENCo involved when further support is needed.
The school uses an assess, plan, do, review cycle. Teachers put support into practice, then consider its impact with parents and the SEND team. For children on the SEND register, School Based Plans contain targets and are shared with families each term; provision is reviewed half-termly. This gives parents recurring opportunities to discuss adjustments and next steps.
Physical access includes a ramp from the Foundation Stage playground and a platform lift serving Foundation Stage. Classroom adaptations can include ear defenders, smaller steps within tasks and sensory room use, depending on the child. Families should assess how those arrangements suit their child’s needs.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through their home local authority.
For the 2025/2026 admissions cycle, applications were due by 15 January. Nursery attendance carried no priority within that cycle’s oversubscription criteria. Nottinghamshire residents applied through Nottinghamshire County Council; families elsewhere applied through the authority where they lived. Treat the nursery choice and the Reception application as separate decisions.
For children with SEND moving between classes, staff pass information and targets to the next teacher and hold a transition meeting. A book or passport can also help a child understand the change when appropriate. That preparation supports continuity of care; it does not confer an admissions advantage.

The Trust permits charges for certain early years provision. Where an optional extra attracts a charge, participation depends on parental choice and agreement. Ask the school for current charges before committing to paid provision.
