At a Glance

Play-based maths and a clear emphasis on talking and independence give Keyworth’s nursery its character. It belongs to the school’s Foundation Unit on Nottingham Road, where Nursery and Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). For parents, that means a nursery curriculum within the school’s early education provision.

Ofsted graded the early years provision Good at the inspection on 4 to 5 March 2025. That judgement covers the school’s early years provision, rather than a separately inspected nursery. Children made good progress from their starting points, with communication, language and independence receiving close attention.

The Nursery Day

Learning starts with the skills young children use throughout the day: communicating, moving, managing feelings and forming relationships. The EYFS then connects these foundations to reading and writing, maths, exploring the world and creative expression. These are linked areas of development, giving parents a broader picture of learning than early reading alone.

White Rose Maths supports practical number learning in the Foundation Unit. Children’s interests and play shape the activities, so maths connects with what they are already doing. Stories matter too. Nursery families are expected to share a story with an adult at least three times a week and add a comment to the home reading diary. This gives shared reading a place in the home routine.

Some nursery children begin Read Write Inc., the school’s phonics programme. The qualification matters: starting this programme in Nursery applies to some children, rather than the whole group. Across early years, learning takes place both outdoors and inside. In March 2025, activities in both environments followed the curriculum’s learning goals, and the curriculum identified developmental milestones. Play therefore had a defined learning purpose.

Care and Support

The staffing structure includes an F1 teacher and Foundation Stage teaching assistants. The Foundation Lead also holds the SENDCo role, bringing early years leadership and special educational needs coordination together. Families with SEND questions can contact SENCO@keyworth.notts.sch.uk.

Lunch offers a choice between a packed meal from home and a school dinner prepared on site. Menus rotate over three weeks. Dietary needs arising from medical, religious or ethical requirements can be accommodated: parents give the school office the details, and the cook responds about arrangements. This makes lunch planning a practical part of preparing for nursery.

Safeguarding records. In March 2025, some school safeguarding records did not capture decisions and actions fully, limiting checks on their impact over time. This school-wide concern is relevant to families using the nursery, and gives parents a concrete issue to discuss with leaders.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Applications for first admission go through Nottinghamshire County Council’s coordinated scheme. Treat that application as a distinct step when planning your child’s next year.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 9am to noon; the afternoon runs from 1pm to 3.30pm, with lunch between noon and 1pm. These boundaries matter when arranging work and collection.

School access is through the Nottingham Road gates or the rear pedestrian gate from Manor Road. Children use their designated entrance or playground collection point. Keep the cul-de-sac clear because emergency vehicles use it, and avoid pavement parking on Nottingham Road.

For nursery enquiries, contact the school office on 0115 9748005 or schooloffice@keyworth.notts.sch.uk. Refer to the school for current charges.
