At a Glance

Stories, poems and rhymes give language a central place in the nursery experience at Mapperley Plains. This is the school's Foundation 1 (F1) provision on Central Avenue, Mapperley, with entry possible from the term following a child's third birthday. Sessions follow the school calendar, making this a term-time choice for families.

At the Ofsted inspection on 3 and 4 December 2024, early years provision received a Good judgement. That applies to the school's early years provision collectively. The nursery's character comes through most clearly in its emphasis on communication and learning to play alongside other children.

The Nursery Day

Language learning has concrete ingredients: rhymes, poems and stories introduce children to unfamiliar words. In December 2024, communication was a particular strength of the early years foundation stage (EYFS). For parents, that means attention to the words children can understand and use, alongside the social skills needed for shared play.

Nursery topics bring that learning close to children's interests. During spring 2026, themes explored travel and differences between animals; the summer theme turned to discoveries outdoors. These give families recognisable subjects to talk about together, rather than an abstract list of curriculum areas.

The school has a modern building and outdoor learning environments. Within early years, children received effective help across their learning in December 2024, while nursery children developed the skills to cooperate in play. Language and social development work together here: learning includes both expressing an idea and joining in with others.

Care and Support

Support in early years was effective in December 2024, helping children develop across the areas of learning. The school also has a SENCO team that includes a Family SENCO, giving additional needs a defined place in its staffing structure.

ClassDojo connects families with learning and class news. Its messaging function is used in EYFS, so parents of younger children have a direct communication route. Teachers usually reply within 48 hours on school days; urgent issues go through the office. Safeguarding concerns can be submitted to the designated safeguarding leads, with urgent concerns taken directly to a lead.

Moving On to Reception

A separate application matters. A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Reception. Families must apply again through the normal Reception process; Nottinghamshire County Council Central Admission Team manages admission to the school. Families living outside Nottinghamshire should contact their own local authority about applying.

Keep that application separate from the nursery experience. Becoming familiar with school life does not remove the need to make a formal Reception application.

Practical Information

Morning nursery runs from 8:50am to 11:50am; afternoon nursery runs from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Both operate during term time. The school handles nursery applications directly, with completed forms returned to the office before the school contacts families nearer admission.

Funding combines a universal 15 hours with a further 15 for eligible working families of children aged three or four, giving up to 30 hours during term time. Eligibility codes come through the government childcare service and require reconfirmation every three months. These funding rules allow optional charges for extras such as trips or meals.
