Nursery at Netherfield Primary School

Two three-hour sessions give Netherfield's nursery its practical shape: a morning or an afternoon within the school's Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Provision includes two-year-olds, alongside places for children aged three and four. For families seeking a shorter nursery day, that distinction matters.
There are 39 funded morning places and 39 funded afternoon places for three- and four-year-olds, subject to availability. Funded places for two-year-olds are limited. The nursery sits within Netherfield Primary School on Chandos Street, Nottingham, rather than operating as a separate setting.
Ofsted judged the school's early years provision Good following the inspection on 19 and 20 July 2022. That judgement covers early years within the school.
Morning children attend from 8.45am to 11.45am; the afternoon runs from 12.15pm to 3.15pm. Both patterns include two-year-olds. These are compact sessions, so the choice determines which part of the day a family needs to keep free for nursery.
Learning belongs to the EYFS, with the school aiming to develop independence and motivation for the next stage of education. Its curriculum uses themes for each year group and aims to connect learning with children's interests. In parent terms, the intention is to give children reasons to use and practise their developing skills across linked activities.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds is the school's phonics programme, used from Foundation Stage. It connects sounds with reading and spelling; early years reading books are matched to the sounds children know. In July 2022, children in early years were making a positive start with reading, supported by daily work on sounds and appropriately matched books.
Curriculum precision. In July 2022, the curriculum beginning in early years still needed clearer identification of the knowledge children should retain across all subjects. The practical issue was how clearly learning built from one step to the next. In July 2022, inspectors also called for every pupil to develop deeper understanding, link their learning and explain their ideas.
Parents' evenings take place in October and March for all children, giving families two scheduled opportunities each year to discuss their child. For a concern about learning or development, the first contact is the class teaching team; the SEND team or Home/School Liaison provides a further route.
The school's support structure includes a SENCO and SEND team. Personal Profiles and SEND Support Plans break learning into smaller steps and are reviewed with parents at least once each term. This gives families a regular point at which to discuss support and next steps. Specialist involvement can include Speech & Language Therapy or Educational Psychology, with parental permission required for a referral.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Nottinghamshire County Council's co-ordinated first-admission scheme and meet the deadline for their application cycle. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for school as separate decisions.
Transition has included time in the next classroom: on 7 July 2022, a Transition Day let children spend time with their future classes, including new Reception children. That was preparation for a change of class, rather than an admissions entitlement.
Nursery applications are handled directly by the school. Three- and four-year-olds have a funded entitlement of 15 hours per week for 38 weeks; eligible working parents can access the nursery's 30-hour provision. From September 2025, eligible working parents of two-year-olds can access funding for 30 hours weekly over 38 weeks.
Contact the school office on 0115 961 0580 or office5@netherfieldprimaryschool.com for a nursery enquiry. School visits can be arranged through the office. For current charges, speak to the school.
